Labor & Delivery Nurse Opportunity

Location: Yuma, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit Details

  • Department: Labor and Delivery
  • L&D Beds: 9
  • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
  • Triage Beds: 7
  • Average Births: 9 per day (approx. 250 per month, 3000 per year)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:1 or 1:2

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring

Experience & Skills Required

  • Must be proficient in vaginal exams (note: nurses from teaching facilities may have less experience due to medical students/residents performing these)
  • Skilled in scalp electrodes, circulating in C-sections, newborn transitions, assisting anesthesiology
  • IV starts, blood draws, APGAR scoring
  • Postpartum hemorrhage control (simulation lab training provided)
  • Epidurals and amnio infusion knowledge
  • Preferred: Experience with spinning babies technique
  • Ability to titrate drips including magnesium, Pitocin, insulin, and blood products

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Patients 28 weeks gestation and above
  • High incidence of hypertension
  • 7-10% of patients with no prenatal care
  • High Spanish-speaking population (Spanish language skills are a plus)
  • Telemetry monitoring utilized

Staffing & Support

  • Charge Nurse present on each shift
  • OB Techs available as nurse aides/surgical techs
  • OB/Neonatologist available in-house 24/7
  • Respiratory Therapy equipment available for neonates (BVM, T-Piece resuscitator)
  • Telemetry monitoring techs on adult side; OB RNs do not read telemetry
  • Some staff have ACLS certification

Scheduling & Shifts

  • Shift times: Approximately 6:45-7:15 AM/PM
  • Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts every 4 weeks (Night shifts on Fri/Sat, Day shifts on Sat/Sun)
  • Holiday requirement: Assigned 2 out of 3 holidays (including eve/day) during contract
  • On-call: Low census on-call, voluntary beyond assigned holidays

Additional Requirements & Notes

  • Floating may include NICU, Pediatrics, Women’s services, MedSurg, ICU, or RDU with appropriate patient assignments
  • L&D nurses may be assigned antepartum patients and must be prepared to care for babies for two hours post-delivery
  • Postpartum experience preferred for postpartum assignments
  • Hospital scrubs provided
  • Orientation includes one unit-specific orientation, one clinical education/EPIC training, and one day floor orientation
