Registered Nurse (Med Surg/Tele) - Travel Assignment

Location: Denison, Iowa
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights (7pm - 7am)
Schedule: Approximately 36 hours/week, every other weekend required, self-scheduling with block schedules possible
Unit: Medical-Surgical with Telemetry
Beds: 21 beds, average census 8-10
Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: Typically 1:5, occasionally 1:6
Orientation: Usually two shifts with a preceptor on unit
Start Date: ASAP
Call: No call required

Job Description

• Provide nursing care on a 19-bed Med-Surg Telemetry unit in a critical access hospital setting.
• Common patient diagnoses include respiratory issues, pneumonia, wound care, post-op orthopedic (hip, knee), occasional gunshot or urology cases, bronchiolitis, and pediatric patients 1-2 times per week (pediatric experience not required).
• Manage cardiac drips such as Cardizem, insulin, and heparin as needed.
• Must be able to set up and use Bi-Pap; however, respiratory therapists and paramedics assist with Bi-Pap management.
• Telemetry monitoring using Mindray monitors; ability to read cardiac rhythm strips preferred.
• Floating: OB nurses may float to Med-Surg/Tele, but Med-Surg/Tele nurses do not float to OB.
• Cerner electronic health record experience preferred but training available.
• Critical Access Hospital (CAH) experience highly preferred.
• Scrubs: Any professional color accepted.

Required Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) license valid in Iowa.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in Med Surg/Telemetry nursing.
• Current certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • PALS (AHA)
• Ability to recognize basic cardiac rhythm strips.

Additional Information

• Must be located at least 50 miles from the facility (no local clinicians accepted).
• No call responsibilities.
• Housing leads available.
• May float within unit as needed.
• Schedule typically made about 2 weeks in advance, sometimes up to 6 weeks.
