Job Summary
Seeking travel RNs for a Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit. This role involves caring for critically ill patients in a 12-bed CVICU, 8-bed Medical/Surgical ICU, and a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with up to 20 beds. Nurses will work across all these areas and must be skilled in critical care nursing.
Unit Details
- Beds:
- CVICU: 12 beds
- COVID Unit: 8 beds
- Medical/Surgical ICU: 8 beds
- PCU: 16-20 beds (with double occupancy rooms)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- ICU: 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity and staffing
- PCU: 1:3 to 1:4
- Staffing:
- Charge nurses may take patient assignments only as a last resort
- House supervisor available 24/7 with some exceptions
- Respiratory therapists cover all areas but not present in ICU 24/7
- Intensivists in-house 24/7 with NP support
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- COVID-19 patients requiring manual proning
- Low-level neurological cases
- Electrolyte and metabolic disorders (DKA, sepsis, ARF)
- Post-surgical patients including open heart surgery
- Patients with devices such as Impella, TAVR, VAD, IABP, Swan-Ganz catheters
- Patients requiring CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy)
- Chest tubes, arterial lines, and other critical care interventions
- Detoxification cases
- STEMI, PCI, CEA procedures
Required Skills & Experience
- Specialty: Intensive Care Nursing
- Minimum Years of Experience: Not explicitly stated; implied experienced ICU RN preferred
- Certifications:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- Clinical Skills:
- Ability to interpret EKGs and ABGs
- Experience with ventilator weaning and troubleshooting
- Ability to titrate critical care drips (pressors, paralytics, sedation, antiarrhythmics, anticoagulants)
- Familiarity with advanced devices such as IABP and Prismaflex CRRT preferred
- Skilled in managing patients with chest tubes, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, and other invasive monitoring
- Comfortable with manual proning and care of COVID patients
- Exams: Must pass a dysrhythmia exam with a minimum score of 80% within two attempts prior to contract signing
Scheduling & Work Environment
- Shift: 12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm or 7pm-7am
- Scheduling:
- Schedules made 4 weeks in advance
- Some self-scheduling allowed but subject to manager approval
- Typically no block scheduling
- Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per pay period (including weekend days and nights)
- Holiday Requirement: At least 1 holiday and 1 holiday eve per contract period
- Call Requirement: Possible on-call once every 6 weeks during low census; no scheduled call
- Floating: May float to PCU, Medical/Surgical Telemetry, or Emergency ICU/PCU as needed
- Dress Code: Professional scrubs in any color except camouflage; navy scrubs starting October
Orientation
- 8 hours general hospital orientation
- 1 full 12-hour shift with a preceptor on the unit
- 2nd 12-hour shift with a buddy for support
- Additional orientation/check-off for specialized skills (e.g., open heart surgery, CRRT) as needed
Additional Notes
- Radius rule: Candidates must not have worked full-time, part-time, or PRN within 50 miles at any affiliated facilities in the past year
- Nurses are responsible for monitoring their own telemetry strips (no telemetry techs on unit)
- Respiratory equipment includes ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, Vapotherm; nurses should be able to troubleshoot and assist with weaning
- Charge nurses assist with rapid response and code blue teams
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Arizona
- Minimum of 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
- Current ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification

Cost of living is High, roughly $2000-2500 for your own private space. Float between East and West Campus, 25 minutes apart, west will likely be where you spend 75% of your shifts so pick your housing accordingly.
