ICU Registered Nurse (RN) - Texas, Bay City

Contract Details

• Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: Nights
• Hours per shift: 12 hours (7 PM - 7 AM)
• Schedule: 36/48 rotating schedule; 5 days on/5 days off, then 2 days on/2 days off matrix
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday

Unit and Patient Care

• Unit Type: ICU with 6 beds
• Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:

  • 2:1 standard
  • 3:1 for lower acuity (stepdown)
  • 1:1 for high acuity patients
• Common Patient Diagnoses: Atrial fibrillation with RVR, sepsis, respiratory failure, severe anemia, GI bleeds, lower acuity trauma, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), fresh total joint replacements
• Ventilator: Puritan Bennett 840
• Drips Administered: Cardiac drips, sedation medications, antiarrhythmics, Sandostatin, insulin
• Charge Nurse Role: Yes, includes patient load
• Nurse Aides: Not routinely available unless needed for 1:1 care
• Tele/Monitor Techs: Not available; nurses monitor their own patients
• Floating Assignments: MedSurg or ER depending on traveler experience; ER patients assigned if traveler is experienced in ER

Orientation and Training

• Floor-specific orientation: 2 days
• Health education/testing modules required prior to start (time varies by individual)
• Must be competent with ventilators or capable of being trained

Support Services

• Hospitalist coverage: 12 hours/day plus call; ER physician in-house 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy: 6 AM - 9 PM on-site, then on-call; nurses expected to intervene if patient deteriorates
• Pharmacy: 6 AM - 9 PM on-site; house supervisor mixes meds after hours, pharmacist on call
• IV Team: No dedicated IV team; PICC team available if needed

Certifications and Requirements

• Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS (must have PALS certification in hand to start), TNCC
• Preferred: NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Experience: Prefer 2-3 years ICU experience
• License: Valid RN license for Texas

Additional Notes

• No block scheduling
• Limited return to office (RTO)
• Scrub colors: Grey, navy blue, or black
• All ICU patients are managed on one unit; major medical issues are transferred out except stroke patients who may receive TPA on site
• Must be able to manage ventilators confidently or be willing to learn
