Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (PCU) - Travel/Contract

Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)

Job Details

  • Unit: Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
  • Shift: 3x12 hour shifts
  • Patient Population: Pulmonary Step Down Unit patients with mechanical ventilation
  • Experience Required: Minimum 2 years in specialty (Registered Nurse)
  • First-time travelers accepted: Yes
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Average Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:3
  • On-call: Not required
  • Floating: May float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Block Schedule: Not accommodated
  • Pending License: Accepted if active prior to start date
  • Guaranteed Hours: Yes

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut required prior to start
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
  • Experience in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Telemetry
  • ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIH Stroke Certification (required for all RNs except Pediatric specialties and NICU)

Licensure

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license for Connecticut required prior to start

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check (updated annually)
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification including foreign equivalency evaluation if applicable
  • Verification of highest level of education
  • Sex offender search
  • Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days
  • Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
  • Skills checklist within 12 months of start
  • References: One supervisor reference within past year required for ICU assignments

Health & Safety Requirements

  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months of start, updated annually (clean shaven required)
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation
  • Annual TB questionnaire
  • Immunizations or proof of immunity for:
    • Rubeola (Measles)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Hepatitis B
    • Varicella
  • 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
  • COVID vaccination series preferred

Facility-Specific Training & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (minimum 85% score)
  • Color blind testing (minimum 80% score) required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for telemetry, ICU, ER, and progressive care units
  • Multiple mandatory training modules and attestations including but not limited to:
    • Stroke education (except pediatric and NICU)
    • CLABSI prevention
    • Preventing pressure injury
    • Language services
    • CAUTI education (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry)
    • Patient transportation with oxygen
    • Suicide risk and environmental assessment
    • Pyxis ES MedStation
    • Baxter pump interoperability
    • Patient bedside rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER)
    • Ventricular assist device awareness
    • Blood administration (except case managers and behavioral health)
    • New employee orientation
    • 21st Century Cures Act module (required for RNs except Home Health)
    • ED handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
    • eCart training (not required for pediatric, periop/OR, outpatient, case managers, home health)
    • Chaperone policy training (required if gap >6 months or updated module)

Additional Notes

  • Prior travel experience is not required for this position
  • Pending license accepted if active before start date
  • Floating may be required within scope of practice
  • Block scheduling is not available

This position offers an opportunity to work in a Level I Trauma Center with a short-term acute care setting, utilizing Epic for charting.
