Registered Nurse (Hospice RN) - Travel/Contract

Location: Creve Coeur, Missouri
Contract Length: 12 weeks


Job Overview

  • Hospice RN role with an average daily census of 8-16 patients.
  • Productivity measured by a daily point system (e.g., labs, lines, start of care visits).
  • High turnover environment, similar to ER/ICU settings with acute symptom management.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required.
  • Acceptable experience includes:
    • 1 year Hospice in home health or inpatient setting, OR
    • 1 year ED, ICU, or critical care experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Prior travel experience is not required.

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • On-call: Not required.
  • Floating: No floating outside scope of practice.
  • Locals not accepted; home address must be at least 75 miles from facility.
  • Territory coverage: 40-80 mile radius.
  • Guaranteed hours: 3 shifts per 13 weeks (cancelled shifts must be full shift length).
  • Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days.

Certifications & Licenses

  • BLS certification required.
  • Pending license accepted.
  • Other certifications may be required depending on unit (e.g., ACLS, PALS, NRP, TNCC) — check unit-specific requirements.
  • Missouri RN license verification required (NURSYS).

Clinical Skills & Special Procedures

  • Acute symptom management: pain, nausea/vomiting, agitation.
  • Skilled in trach care, CPAP/BiPAP, feeding tubes, suction, ports, pleurx drains, colostomy, urostomy, wound care.
  • Experience with special equipment: CPAP, BiPAP, pleurx drains, pain pumps.

Documentation & Compliance Requirements

  • Government-issued ID and driver’s license required.
  • Criminal background check within 6 months required (including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable).
  • Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
  • Education verification of highest nursing degree required.
  • Various state-specific background checks and registries required for Missouri and Illinois placements.
  • Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel, must be current throughout assignment.
  • Physical exam within 1 year of start required.
  • Fit mask testing required annually (specific mask models accepted).
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Tdap (or Td booster) every 10 years.
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year.
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable.
    • Hepatitis B declination required (vaccination not mandatory).
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.

Facility & Work Environment

  • Dress code: Royal Blue or Pewter scrubs.
  • Charting system: EPIC.
  • No floating outside scope of practice.

Additional Notes

  • Must complete facility-specific compliance training and documents prior to start (e.g., HIPAA, confidentiality, hand hygiene, dress code policies).
  • Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required and must be updated annually.
  • Two professional references required (supervisors preferred).
  • Employment application and performance evaluations may be required.
