Critical Care Float - Registered Nurse
Location: Saint Louis, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Description
- ICU Float position covering multiple ICUs: Trauma, Oncology, Cardiac/Heart and Vascular, Neurology, Medicine, and COVID units.
- When ICU needs are low, float to inpatient floors (Med Surg, Oncology, Neurology, Medicine, Trauma, Heart and Vascular, COVID) as a staff nurse.
- ICU nurse-to-patient ratio: 2:1 for all shifts.
- Inpatient floor ratio: no more than 1:3.
- May be asked to serve as a patient sitter if needed.
- Every other weekend required, minimum 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule, plus holiday rotation.
- No specific CVICU experience required, but preferred cardiac skills include Swans-hemodynamic interpretation, IABP, Impella, ECMO, vasoactive drips, CRRT.
- Required skills: ventilator management, IV starts, telemetry, conscious sedation, BCLS, ACLS, NIH Stroke Certification.
- Preferred certifications: CCRN, ONS, TNCC, CPI, chemo administration, triage, ICP, PA lines, Level 1 Trauma experience.
- Must have 2 years ICU experience plus a minimum of 1 year CV ICU experience.
- Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers will not be accepted.
- EPIC charting experience preferred.
Shift Details
- Night shift: 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (18:45 to 7:15).
- Total hours per week: 36.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri.
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience, including ICU experience within the last year.
- Completion of at least one travel nursing assignment.
- Float experience across multiple units.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- Current ACLS certification.
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID required.
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, plus international if applicable.
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required.
- Education verification of highest nursing degree required before start.
- Professional license primary source verification (NURSYS for Missouri).
- Drug testing within 1 year, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methadone, opiates, oxycodone, PCP). Must be current throughout assignment.
- Physical exam within 1 year of start.
- Fit mask testing (N95) required annually; facial hair must allow proper fit.
- Immunizations and health screenings:
- Tdap vaccine or declination (expires every 10 years)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (2 negative PPDs or T-Spot/Q-Gold acceptable)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination or medical/religious exemption required during flu season (09/30 - 04/01)
- Required facility-specific documents prior to start:
- HIPAA Acknowledgement (annual)
- Latex Allergy Questionnaire (annual)
- Confidentiality Form (annual)
- Regulatory Compliance Education and quiz (annual, 80% passing score)
- TB Questionnaire (annual)
- Hand Hygiene Policy acknowledgment
- Fingernail Policy acknowledgment
- Dress Code Policy acknowledgment
- Orientation modules completion (approx. 16 hours) through facility learning system, required for all RNs.
Additional Requirements
- Two professional references required; supervisors preferred if within last year.
- Unit-specific competency exams and skills checklists required and must be current within 1 year. Oncology competency exam required if assigned to Oncology unit.
- Employment application must be completed and uploaded.
