Registered Nurse – Outpatient Surgery (Travel/Contract)
Location: Orange, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Day shift, 4x10 hours (6:00 AM – 4:30 PM)
Hours per Week: 40
Job Summary
- Work in a fast-paced procedure center caring primarily for pediatric inpatients and outpatients, with occasional adult patients.
- Minor surgical cases include ENT, plastics, general surgery, ophthalmology, urology, dentistry, and oncology.
- General surgery experience is required.
- EMR experience is required (documentation system: SurgiNet/Cerner).
- Endoscopy experience is a plus; training available if needed.
- Call required: 5 weekdays and 2 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule.
- Weekend coverage required.
- No floating required.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in California.
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, with OR experience within the last year.
- Experience in an outpatient setting.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
- Current certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) issued by the American Heart Association
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport) with front and back copies, presented upon arrival.
- Criminal background check within 60 days of start, including SSN trace, education verification, and national databases.
- SAM/EPLS and HHS/OIG checks within 60 days of start.
- Verification of highest applicable degree or diploma required.
- Drug screen: Negative 9-panel test within 60 days of start (instant drug screens not accepted).
- Immunizations and health screenings required:
- Tdap vaccine (TD or Dtap not acceptable)
- Negative TB test (IGRA or 2-step PPD within 60 days) or chest X-ray if positive history
- Annual TB questionnaire
- Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity (positive titer or vaccines)
- Hepatitis B immunity or declination
- Mask fit testing required prior to start (cannot be completed onsite). Acceptable masks include 9205+, 3M 8210, 8110s, and 1804.
- Physical exam within 1 year (Aya standard).
- Eye exam (in-person visual acuity) required prior to start.
- Color blind exam (Ishihara test) required prior to start.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
- COVID vaccines preferred but not required.
Orientation & Facility Requirements
- Completion of facility-specific orientation modules prior to starting clinical work (approximately 6-8 hours). Modules assigned by Friday before orientation week and must be completed by Thursday at 5 PM.
- Facility orientation includes virtual and in-person components; candidates must be local or able to report to campus.
- Badge photo required (professional image with solid background).
- Completion and signing of facility-specific documents including:
- Job description acknowledgment
- Non-disclosure agreement
- Safety manual and HIPAA acknowledgment
- Dress code acknowledgment (no artificial nails allowed; natural nails must be ≤ ¼ inch)
- Mission, vision, and values acknowledgment
- Standards of conduct packet
- AIDET acknowledgment
- Pyxis access form must be completed prior to start.
- TB screening form required if positive TB history.
- Medication and pediatric competency exams required.
- References: Two supervisor references required (charge RN or floor supervisor acceptable). May be pending at start if necessary.
- Work history verification of at least 2 previous employers covering up to 7 years of relevant experience required prior to start.
Additional Notes
- Radiation badge required for Procedure Center staff; new badges provided by facility, not by agency.
- Call schedule includes 5 weekdays and 2 weekend shifts every 6 weeks.
- No floating to other units required.
- Candidate should have majority of specialty experience listed; willingness to train in endoscopy is a plus.
This position is ideal for experienced pediatric RNs with strong general surgery and minor procedure experience who thrive in a fast-paced environment and are able to commit to a 13-week travel contract with call and weekend coverage.
