Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical

Location: Abingdon, Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Details

• Patient ratio: 1:7
• Schedule: 36/36 (36 hours on, 36 hours off)
• Rotating weekends and holidays required
• No on-call duties
• Floating to other units required
• General orientation includes 16 hours of non-billable training, starting on Sundays (online CBLs)
• Hospital may cancel or call off one shift biweekly without penalty due to census changes
• Additional overtime shifts may be assigned flexibly based on census/resource needs
• Expected to actively participate in nursing student support and clinical education alongside clinical care

Required Certifications

• AHA Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (verify unit-specific requirements)
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Other certifications may be required or preferred depending on unit (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC)

Required Qualifications

• Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Virginia
• Minimum of 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
• Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
• Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification

Orientation & Compliance

• Background check within 30 days of start, covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
• Education verification required
• Drug screening (9-panel) within 14 days of start
• Physical exam within 1 year of start
• Immunizations and titers required or documentation of immunity/declination for:

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  • Varicella
  • Hepatitis B
  • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap
  • Negative TB test or chest X-ray as applicable
• Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season
• Respirator medical evaluation and fit testing completed onsite
• Photo for badge and various facility-specific forms must be completed within specified timeframes

Additional Information

• Medication/pharmacology competency exams required as applicable
• Skills checklist and references required (preferably 3 references)
• Must comply with dress code, uniform guidelines, and safety policies
• Candidate must review and complete exposure and tobacco use statements
• No prior travel experience explicitly required

This position offers a structured schedule with no call, opportunities for overtime, and involvement in nursing education. It requires flexibility to float and meet certification and compliance standards.
