Job Opportunity: Medical Surgical Registered Nurse

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Unit & Patient Information

  • Mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients
  • Approximately 48 beds (24 PCU + 24 MS Telemetry)
  • Patient diagnoses include a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers
  • High acuity patient population
  • Pediatric patients are extremely rare on this unit; pediatric experience is NOT required
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention

Schedule & Orientation

  • Self-scheduling requests are accepted before final schedule posting
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift
    • Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
  • Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but subject to staffing needs
  • Weekend shifts are variable

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum of 1 year of recent Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience
  • Oncology experience
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Skills & Equipment

  • Experience with or willingness to learn:
    • GE B450 telemetry monitors
    • Bladder Scanner
    • Alaris infusion pumps
    • Continuous Bladder Irrigation
    • Patient-Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps
  • Chemotherapy competence is not required; optional 2-day chemotherapy course available for professional development

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting (Ohio-specific)
  • Education verification from an accredited nursing program (CCNE, ACEN, or NLN CNEA)
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start
  • Various health documentations required, including:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start
    • Immunizations and titers (MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, TB test or questionnaire)
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season
  • Competency exams required prior to start, including medication/pharmacology and unit-specific competency exams
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required within 1 year of start and updated annually
  • Annual acknowledgment of safety manual, dress code, hand hygiene, ethics, and compliance policies

References & Documentation

  • Two professional references required; at least one must be from a manager or formal leadership
  • Employment application and skills checklist required

This position is ideal for RNs interested in medical-surgical oncology care with telemetry experience, who are flexible with scheduling and open to travel assignments. Oncology experience is a plus but not mandatory.
