Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Medical Specialty Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Overview
- 56 beds (private and semi-private)
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- 1:4-5 (7:00 AM – 11:00 PM)
- 1:5-6 (11:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Patient Care Tech (PCT) ratio: 1:8-10, assist with vital signs, accuchecks, bladder scans, and ADLs
- Free charge nurse on each floor (does not take patient assignment)
- House-wide telemetry monitored remotely; RNs can view strips on monitors (Phillips brand)
- Respiratory therapy equipment includes BiPAP/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, and suctioning
Patient Population & Common Diagnoses
- Acute care general medical patients with conditions such as:
- Cellulitis
- Sepsis
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Syncope
- Anemia
- Uncontrolled diabetes
- Acute respiratory failure
- Liver failure
- Kidney failure
- Behavioral health and addictions
Required Certifications & Skills
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, and chest tubes required
- Preferred: EPIC electronic health record experience
- Preferred: Prior travel nursing experience on a MedSurg floor
- Candidates with experience in a Level I trauma center may be considered without prior travel experience if they have EPIC experience
- RNs are not required to titrate drips
- Common drips used: Heparin, Lasix
Scheduling & Work Environment
- 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling available via electronic system
- Weekend requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days, Fri/Sat for nights)
- Holiday requirements vary
- No call or standby requirements
- Floating required to other acute care general medical areas such as nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, and oncology
Orientation & Policies
- Unit-specific orientation: 2-3 shifts
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- Drug-free campus; negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress code: Any color professional scrubs; no visible tattoos or piercings except ears
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
Required Licensure & Documentation
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- Submission requirements include last four digits of SSN, middle initial, and requested time off
Additional Notes
- Call-off policy allows the equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks without penalty or pay obligation
