Registered Nurse (MedSurg) - Florida

Location

Marianna, Florida (near Panama City Beach and Tallahassee)
Small community hospital with approximately 88 occupied beds (licensed for 100 beds)
MedSurg unit has about 28 beds (can surge to 28 due to COVID)
Non-Trauma facility
Teaching hospital with medical and nursing students regularly present

Position Details

Specialty: MedSurg RN
Shift: Midshift (11:00 AM – 7:00 PM), Friday to Friday schedule
Work schedule: 8 days on / 6 days off, 72 hours guaranteed every 2 weeks
Contract length: 13 weeks
No float except required float to PCU (stepdown unit); assignments on PCU limited to nurse’s skill set if no PCU experience
Possible call duties
Weekend requirement: every other weekend (Saturday/Sunday), with flexibility for more weekends if desired
Holidays: Travelers integrated into permanent staff holiday rotation

Patient Care & Unit Information

Nurse-to-patient ratio: typically 1:6, rarely 1:7
PCU (stepdown) ratios when normal: 1:4
Telemetry monitored remotely in ICU; MedSurg/Tele nurses do not read or interpret telemetry strips
Drips occasionally present (insulin, Cardizem, amiodarone) but titration is rare and only assigned to nurses with prior drip experience
Occasional use of CPAP, BiPAP, or High Flow O2; no ventilators on unit
Respiratory Therapist available 24/7 for vents, EKGs, breathing treatments, and ABGs
No dedicated IV team; several staff certified for PICC and midline assistance
Pharmacy access via Omnicell; pharmacy not open 24/7

Orientation & Training

Pre-orientation packet provided before arrival
One-day on-site orientation covering policies, procedures, computer systems, admissions, discharges, medication scanning, and charting
Shadowing with charge nurse and floor nurse during orientation

Technology & Equipment

EMR system: CPSI - Evident Thrive (noted as user-friendly)
IV pumps: Baxter Sigma
Cardiac monitors: Neon Kohden
Medication dispensing: Omnicell

Certifications & Experience Requirements

Valid RN license in Florida
Med Surg experience of at least 1.25 years, with experience within the last year
Completion of at least one travel assignment
BLS certification
Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Additional Notes

Nurses clock in/out using hospital system; timecards require supervisor signature and submission to recruiter
Housing available nearby (approx. $200/week)
Parking free near ER, about 100 yards from unit
Cafeteria open 7 AM – 6 PM, managed by a restaurant chain with quality food
Scrub color preference: navy preferred; black or gray acceptable
Charge nurse coverage: days usually have charge nurse, evenings sometimes, nights have senior nurse instead
Nurse aides (PCTs) well staffed, typically 4 PCTs for 24 patients
