Job Details
- Specialty: NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), Level 3
- Contract Length: 13 weeks
- Shift: 12-hour shifts (0700-1930, 1900-0730)
- Scheduling: Self-scheduling with block scheduling allowed
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend for day shift; night shift weekend coverage is flexible based on facility needs (Friday and Saturday nights)
- Holiday Requirement: Assist with coverage as needed
- Call/Standby: No current call requirement
- Floating: Travelers are first to float; may float to PICU, PIC, Pediatrics, Nursery, sitter, Behavioral Health, or adult units as needed
Unit Information
- Beds: 60 total private rooms, expandable to 65; 40 designated NICU rooms, 20 intermediate care
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: NICU 1:1-3; Intermediate NIC 1:3-4
- Charge Nurse: Present on each shift; may take patient assignments if staffing gaps exist
- Support Staff: Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) used, no specific ratio; Neonatologist in-house 24/7; 2-3 Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) 24/7; Resident/Fellow coverage available
- Monitoring: All patients monitored with Phillips monitors; no telemetry techs; RNs do not read their own strips
- Respiratory Equipment: Conventional ventilators, oscillator ventilator, JET ventilator, CPAP, nasal IMV, heated high flow, tracheostomy care; RNs troubleshoot equipment as needed
Patient Population
- Patients from 22 weeks gestation and up
- Common diagnoses include abdominal defects, pre-cardiac repair, persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), and other genetic defects
- Preferred experience with micro preemie care and Level 3/4 ICU
Required Certifications & Skills
- Certifications: BLS (AHA), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
- Experience: Preferred Level 3/4 ICU experience; micro preemie care preferred
- Skills: RNs required to titrate drips per orders (common drips include Fentanyl, Morphine, Precedex)
Orientation & Dress Code
- Unit-specific orientation: 1-2 days (1 day NIC, 1 day NICU)
- Dress code: No specific scrub color required; no fake nails, nail polish, jewelry, or watches allowed
- Scrubs not provided
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Drug-free campus policy; negative drug screen required
- No call or standby currently required
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours (guaranteed hours do not apply during orientation)
