Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – PCU/Med Surg/Oncology
Location: Omaha, Nebraska
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (various start times including 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 3p-7p, 7p-11p, 11p-7a, 7p-7a)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
Unit: 6 East – PCU, Oncology, and MedSurg
Number of Beds: 27-28
Patient Population: Adults
Unit & Patient Care Details
- Mixed unit with PCU, Oncology, Trauma, and MedSurg patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios:
- PCU: 1:4
- Med/Surg: 1:5 (days), 1:5-6 (nights)
- Common diagnoses: Oncology and trauma patients
- Common drips/medications: Chemotherapy, heparin, cardizem, protonix
- Nurses may titrate drips such as insulin (occasionally) and cardizem
- Float assignments within same level of care (PCU and MedSurg units)
- Nursing assistant support and charge nurse available
- Additional unit support: PT/OT, RN case manager, social work, educator, dietician
Required Certifications & Competencies
- Certifications:
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- BLS (Basic Life Support, AHA)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ONS/ONCC (Oncology Nursing Society/Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation)
- Chemotherapy Certification (Chemo Cert) required
- Competencies:
- Ventilator management
- Hemodynamic monitoring (CVP, A-line, Swan-Ganz, EV-1000) – training provided in real time
- ICP monitoring
- EMR system: EPIC
- IV Pumps: Alaris
- Specialty equipment: Lyko lifts (even rooms), other lift equipment available
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required (including oncology and PCU experience)
- Charge nurse experience requires minimum 1 year
- Prior travel experience is NOT required; first-time travelers are welcome
Orientation & Training
- Orientation length: 2 days
- Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass
Additional Information
- Scrubs color: Navy Blue
- Fingernail policy: Artificial nails prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply results in contract termination
- Driver’s license required at submission to verify candidate location (radius rule applies)
- Patient experience focus: Hourly rounding, cultural sensitivity, teamwork, and compassionate care
- Candidates must not be currently employed full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI or Dignity) within 50 miles
Summary
This is a 13-week contract for an RN with oncology and PCU experience in a mixed PCU/Med Surg/Oncology unit. The role requires strong clinical skills, chemotherapy certification, and the ability to work 12-hour shifts with every other weekend coverage. The unit values teamwork, cultural sensitivity, and compassionate patient care. Orientation includes a competency exam, and first-time travel nurses are welcome.
