Registered Nurse - Stepdown Care Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit Type: Stepdown Care Unit
- Beds: 20 (8 private rooms, remainder semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 3:1
- Patient Types: COPD, CHF, Diabetes Mellitus, Sepsis, Renal issues, DKA, Alcohol withdrawal, Overdoses, Pneumonia, respiratory conditions, neuro/surgical/cardiac patients
- Common Equipment: Bipap, Cpap, face mask ventilators, tracheostomies, ventilators, chest tubes, G tubes, NG tubes, PICC lines, central lines
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or application in process
- BLS certification required
- ACLS certification recommended
- ICU/Intermediate (Stepdown) nursing experience required (Progressive care or telemetry experience alone is not sufficient)
- Experience with tracheostomy and ventilator care required
- Ability to titrate drips (Cardene, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Dobutamine, Heparin, low dose/infrequent Vasopressors)
Job Responsibilities & Environment
- Nurse-to-patient ratio typically 3:1; may float to ICU (2:1), other Stepdown, or General Medicine units as needed
- Charge nurse present on each shift; may take patient assignments if staffing is low
- Two patient care technicians per shift, each caring for up to 10 patients when unit is full
- Tele/Monitor techs interpret strips; RNs confirm readings (Phillips monitors)
- 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm or 7pm-7am) with block scheduling possible
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend (night shift Fri/Sat, day shift Sat/Sun)
- Holiday requirement: every other holiday rotation, including companion day on major holidays
- No call or standby requirement
- Dress code: any color scrubs
- Orientation: 1 day EPIC training, 1 day unit orientation with educator, 1 day floor orientation with RN
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within 50-mile radius
- Drug-free workplace; negative drug screen required
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- Call-off policy: equivalent of 12 hours every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay required for missed shifts
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 1 year ICU/Intermediate (Stepdown) nursing experience with required skills
- Prior travel experience is not explicitly required for this position
This position is ideal for RNs with strong ICU/Stepdown experience who are comfortable managing complex patients requiring ventilator and drip management in a 12-hour shift environment.
