Emergency Department RN Opportunity

Location: Winnemucca, Nevada
Specialty: Emergency Department - RN
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Overview

  • Position for an ER RN with variable shifts (typically 6am-6pm, no mid shifts)
  • Must have strong independent skills and at least 3 years of ER nursing experience
  • Preference for candidates who have completed 3 or more travel assignments
  • Occasional floating to MS/Telemetry to assist other nurses (usually not assigned own patients)

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • Preferred: NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Department & Facility Details

  • Trauma Level: Critical Access Hospital (CAH)
  • STEMI Receiving: Stabilize and transfer out STEMIs and strokes
  • ER Beds: 8
  • No designated fast track or separate triage nurse; all nurses may triage using ESI model
  • No separate holding area; holds are kept in the ED
  • 2 designated safe rooms for psychiatric patients with 24/7 in-house security rounding every 15 minutes
  • Security is in-house 24/7 and rounds throughout the hospital
  • Average patient volume: ~30 patients/day (700/month)
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-4 depending on acuity and census

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

  • Mix of pediatric (25%) and adult patients
  • Large Hispanic population
  • Common cases include:
    • Cardiac issues (arrhythmias, STEMIs, NSTEMIs, hypertension, CHF exacerbations)
    • Strokes and post-stroke care
    • Traumas (motor vehicle accidents, falls)
    • Orthopedic cases
    • GI issues
    • Alcohol-related cases and overdoses
    • COPD and respiratory issues

Experience & Skills Required

  • Must have triage experience
  • Comfortable with conscious sedation and managing critical drips including ketamine for bedside procedures
  • Experience with all critical drips preferred
  • Critical Access Hospital experience preferred but not required

Team & Support

  • 1 ED physician onsite per 24-hour shift
  • Designated working charge nurse available as a resource
  • Manager assists with triage when needed
  • No CNAs in the ED; primary care nursing model
  • Nurses may precept nursing, EMT, and paramedic students (usually assigned to permanent staff but travelers may assist)
  • Respiratory Therapist (RT) available 24/7 to assist with intubation, ABGs, respiratory treatments, and equipment management
  • Nurses may assist with respiratory equipment troubleshooting (NC, High Flow, CPAP, BiPAP, trachs, vents)
  • No monitor techs; nurses interpret telemetry themselves
  • Radiology (X-ray/CT) located close to ED; nurses accompany critical patients during transport
  • RN responsible for lab draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy available if needed

Scheduling & Orientation

  • Shifts: 6am-6pm, no mid shifts
  • Schedule typically block style (6 days on, 8 days off) but flexibility required to fill gaps
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend or 1-2 weekends per month
  • Holiday rotation: Every other holiday; may be asked to work holidays
  • No call or standby requirements
  • No floating requirements except possible Rapid Response Team (RRT) or code response within hospital
  • Scrub color: Navy blue
  • Orientation: 1 day general orientation + 1-2 days with preceptor

  • ED sees a high acuity patient population due to walk-in clinic presence
