Interim Leader - Administration (Emergency Department)

Location: Poplar Bluff, Missouri
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Typically Days (varies based on need), 24/7 call responsibility over team

Job Summary

Provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the Emergency Department, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced environment. Oversee clinical practice, departmental operations, staffing, and education while fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, drive quality improvement initiatives, and support professional development of team members.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Emergency Department to deliver care consistent with organizational and regulatory standards.
• Collaborate with medical staff, nursing leadership, and ancillary departments to improve care coordination, throughput, and patient experience.
• Monitor departmental performance metrics such as length of stay, left-without-being-seen rates, door-to-provider times, and patient satisfaction; identify trends and implement improvements.
• Ensure readiness for regulatory, accreditation, and compliance requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission, CMS, state agencies).
• Direct emergency preparedness planning and participate in disaster response coordination.
• Respond promptly to patient care concerns, critical incidents, and operational disruptions.
• Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.
• Schedule employees effectively and consult on staffing issues.
• Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to staff.
• Collaborate on strategic planning, budgeting, resource allocation, and long-term departmental goals.
• Monitor expenditures and ensure cost-effective service delivery.
• Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve operational efficiency.
• Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
• Participate in audits, inspections, and accreditation processes.
• Maintain regular and reliable attendance and comply with all policies and standards.
• May perform staff duties as needed while meeting all job competencies.

Unit Details

• Patient ratio typically 1:4 (may vary)
• 26 beds in the Emergency Department

Required Qualifications

• 3 to 5 years of Emergency Department leadership experience
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
• Current BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certifications required

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree (MSN)
• Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
• Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)
• Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification (ENPC)

Additional Notes

• 24/7 call responsibility for the team is required.
• This is a travel interim leadership role with a start date ASAP.
