Registered Nurse (NICU) - Travel Position
Location: San Antonio, Texas
Employment Type: Travel
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 7 PM – 7 AM
Weekend Requirement: 4 weekends per 6 weeks, including two Mondays and two Fridays
Patient Ratio: 1:2, 1:3, or 1:4 (with CNA support for 1:4 assignments)
Unit Level: Level 4 NICU (from feeder growers to complex ICU neonatal patients)
Job Summary
- Independently provides routine and complex nursing care in a Level 4 NICU setting.
- Demonstrates clinical judgment and manages contingencies in neonatal nursing care.
- Makes appropriate patient care assignments and delegates tasks to other care providers.
- Provides care consistent with ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
- Addresses complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families.
- Administers medications and treatments per protocol, monitoring for side effects and effectiveness.
- Documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care provided.
- Assesses learning needs and educates patients, families, and caregivers.
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in neonatal nursing or related specialty preferred.
- Perinatal RN Residency or recent practice in a Perinatal Setting preferred.
Licenses & Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in Texas or compact state.
- Current BLS Certification (AHA only).
- Current STABLE certification (Post-resuscitation/Pre-transport Stabilization Care of Sick Infants) as Participant, Lead Instructor, or Support Instructor.
- Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification.
Orientation & Competency
- New hires must attend New Nurses Orientation within the first 30 days.
- Precepted by trained staff with successful completion of organizational and Perinatal Services-specific competency validations.
- Completion of all annual competency verification requirements.
Work Schedule & Environment
- Full-time night shift (7 PM to 7 AM).
- Weekend coverage required as specified.
- Patient assignments supported by CNAs for higher ratios.
Additional Notes
- This position requires strong leadership skills consistent with organizational competencies (Leader of Self, Others, or Leaders).
- Experience working in a Level 4 NICU with complex neonatal patients is essential.
