Registered Nurse - Observation Unit

Location: Urbana, Illinois
Employment Type: Clinical Nursing
Shift: Days, 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Job Description

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care to a group of patients during a designated shift. Responsibilities include utilizing the nursing process, applying current nursing trends and technology, and managing resources to deliver quality patient care.

Essential Functions

Perform all unit-specific nursing duties within the scope of service.
Implement procedures and theories related to the observation unit.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care.
Complete initial patient assessments upon admission and develop individualized plans of care.
Implement and modify plans of care based on ongoing patient evaluation.
Ensure patient and staff safety by identifying and addressing hazards.
Communicate effectively with healthcare team members to resolve issues.
Provide constructive feedback to peers and engage in professional development.
Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.

Department-Specific Functions

Assess IV sites every 4 hours.
Start new IVs according to policy.
Maintain documentation standards as verified by quarterly chart audits.
Attend at least 5 out of 6 staff meetings annually.
Identify changes in patient status and respond appropriately.

Required Qualifications

Education

Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing required

Experience

Minimum 1 year of experience in a Direct Observation Unit (DOU) within the last year
Experience working with Level 1 Trauma patients
Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Licensure & Certifications

Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association
