Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - Step Down Unit

Location: Dayton, Ohio
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Cardiac experience required, specifically with CABG and valve post-op patients.
  • Must have experience working in Step Down (SD) or Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with a 1:5 patient ratio documented in work history. ICU experience does not count toward SD/PCU experience.
  • EPIC electronic health record experience required.
  • Targeted patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6.
  • Must pass an online EKG telemetry competency assessment before starting.
  • Required certifications and skills include:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • IV start
    • NIH Stroke Certification
    • Cardiac drip titration and ability to read and interpret cardiac strips.
  • Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks prior to working on the High-Risk Respiratory Unit (HRRU) unless PAPR is offered/needed.
  • Preferred experience: 1.5 years with some level 1 or 2 acuity.
  • Prior travel experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Floating assignments may include working in specialty clusters or high-risk respiratory/COVID units.
  • Must be available to work every other weekend and holidays.
  • The unit is a 36-bed Step Down unit managing pre- and post-op open heart patients (CABG, valve, mitral clip, TAVR, thoracotomy), lung cases (pneumothorax, hemothorax, chest tubes, zephyr valve), and advanced cardiac patients on continuous telemetry.
  • Dress code: Navy blue scrubs.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience of 1.5 years
  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Experience with Epic electronic health record system

Additional Information

  • Floating assignments may include working on other campuses within a 10-15 mile radius.
  • The employer reserves the right to cancel shifts or contracts with notice.
  • Travel nurses are not eligible for employee incentives.
  • Nurses will be fitted for N95 masks or PAPR as needed.
  • Must be available for every other weekend and holiday shifts.
  • Orientation and competency exams must be completed as required.
  • Drug screening includes a 9 or 10 panel test including marijuana; medical marijuana use is not accepted.
  • Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season.
  • Fingerprinting is not required for this unit.
  • Must comply with all health and safety documentation and credentialing requirements.
