Job Opportunity: Radiation Oncology Registered Nurse
Location: Lancaster, California
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Support a fast-paced radiation oncology team alongside physicians and another RN.
- Perform patient education, start IVs, assist providers during consults and follow-ups.
- Manage side effects and coordinate concurrent chemo-radiation treatments.
- Assist with nasalpharyngeal scopes performed by physicians.
- Triage patient calls and manage electronic in-baskets.
- Day shift, Monday through Friday, no weekends, no on-call, no float.
- First-time travelers are welcome.
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in California
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Minimum 2 years of Hematology/Oncology nursing experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Chemotherapy certification (CHEMO)
Preferred Experience and Skills
- Outpatient oncology and radiation oncology experience.
- Care of patients with various cancers including bladder, brain, breast, colorectal, ENT, kidney, liver, lung, melanoma, lymphoma, ovarian, uterine, and prostate cancers.
- Knowledge of medications such as antiemetics, antitumor agents, antibiotics, corticosteroids, Neupogen, and hormonal therapies.
- Management of oncologic emergencies including acute tumor lysis syndrome, anaphylaxis, hemorrhage, sepsis, and spinal cord compression.
- IV push narcotic administration, medication tolerance/dependence assessment, PCA pump management, transdermal patches, and neutropenic precautions.
- Experience with advanced directives, hospice care, patient and family education/support, and withholding/withdrawing treatment.
- Radiation therapy knowledge including external radiation (telemetry), radiation safety precautions, total body irradiation, and wound care.
- Symptom management for skin/mucous membrane alterations, altered mental status, GI symptoms, edema, nausea/vomiting, neuropathy, and post-surgical care.
Shift Details
- Day shift: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (5 days per week, 40 hours total)
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License or State ID).
- Background checks including social security trace, education verification, and national sex offender registry.
- Primary source license verification and NURSYS verification prior to start.
- Annual completion of orientation safety manual acknowledgement.
- Physical exam within the last 12 months.
- Immunizations and health screenings:
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or declination form.
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray as applicable.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccination or positive titers.
- Hepatitis B series or positive titer (declination requires proof of non-immune status).
- Varicella vaccination or positive titer (declination requires notification and accommodations).
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption during flu season.
- Drug screening: 10-panel oral drug screen within 1 year of start.
- Respirator questionnaire and annual respirator fit testing clearance.
- Completion of facility-specific forms including job description acknowledgement, health focus questionnaire, and COVID-19 related forms (declination or booster documentation as applicable).
- Passport-style photo for badge.
Additional Notes
- Caribbean Blue scrubs required but not provided.
- No prior travel experience required; first-time travelers are accepted.
