Operating Room Registered Nurse (Pediatric)
Location: Charleston, West Virginia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a 30-bed Operating Room unit serving pediatric patients from newborn to 17 years old.
- Shift options: Either 5x8-hour shifts (06:45–15:15) or 4x10-hour shifts (06:45–17:15).
- Call requirement: 6-8 call shifts per month, including some weeknights and weekends on a rotating schedule.
- Guaranteed 40 hours per week.
- No floating to other facilities.
- Permanent address must be at least 75 miles from the facility (no local candidates accepted).
- Pending state license accepted for submission; active license required to start.
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in West Virginia.
- Minimum 2 years of Operating Room experience in Pediatrics OR, with at least some experience within the last year.
- One completed travel assignment.
- Experience working with pediatric patients.
- Experience in both OR scrub and circulate roles.
- Experience in women's services.
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association.
- ACLS certification.
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN).
Certifications (Must be current and not pending)
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) – required for pediatric units.
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) – AHA only.
- NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) – may be required depending on unit.
- Other certifications such as CHEMO, TNCC, CPI may be required based on unit assignment.
- Pass/Fail testing for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration required for nursing candidates.
Skills & Competencies
- Pediatric General OR and General OR skills.
- Ability to scrub and circulate.
- IV start skills preferred.
- Must complete annual specialty-specific skills checklist.
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam required.
- Color blindness testing required prior to start.
- Competency exams may be required depending on unit.
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, signed by a licensed provider, confirming good health and no physical limitations.
- Annual fit mask testing (N95 3M 1860 Small/Regular or Aura 9205) required; PAPR accommodations available if fit test fails.
- Negative TB test within 3 months of start or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history.
- Tdap vaccination required (no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions require approval).
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunity required via vaccination or positive titers.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity required; must complete series if not immune.
- Varicella immunity required via vaccination or positive titers.
- Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a comprehensive panel; no pending results accepted.
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.
- COVID-19 vaccination or signed declination accepted.
Background & Documentation
- 7-year criminal background check within 30 days of start.
- Sex offender search, EPLS/GSA/SAM, and HHS/OIG checks required and must be current.
- Social Security card and valid driver’s license required.
- Primary source verification of state license within 30 days of start.
- NURSYS verification required for RN license.
- At least one reference from a manager, supervisor, or charge nurse within the past year.
- Specialty-specific skills checklist and minimum two manager/charge nurse references required.
- Candidate profile, license/certification verification, and other facility-specific documents must be submitted as one PDF.
Orientation & Training
- Orientation is two days (Thursday and Friday) including Cerner Infusion Management.
- Completion of required inservice training modules and pass/fail testing prior to start.
- Review of facility-specific policies such as blood administration, dress code, time and attendance, and vaccination exemption forms.
- Candidates must review and sign required facility documents before starting.
Additional Notes
- No permanent employees may return as travelers within 2 years of last permanent day worked.
- Flu vaccine refusal without medical proof will disqualify candidate during flu season.
- Schedule flexibility required; blocked schedules cannot be guaranteed.
- Manager appreciates travelers adding weeks if requesting time off to maintain full contract length.
