Registered Nurse – Medical Surgical (Burn Unit)
Location: Seattle, Washington
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36
Unit & Patient Population
- 15 room, 26 bed unit
- Patient population includes Adult Burn, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Trauma, and Burn patients
- Special procedures: anesthesia-assisted painful wound care (nitrous oxide available), two tank rooms and a bath room for wound care
- Wound care RN assists primary RN in tank rooms during day shifts (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
- EtCO2 monitoring for specific patients
- Average daily census: 22 patients
Staffing Ratios & Scheduling
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 3-4:1 (day), 4-5:1 (night)
- Weekend requirement: every other weekend
- Floating: Travelers will be the first to float within scope to meet facility needs
- Block scheduling: Not accommodated
- Locals accepted
- Guaranteed hours: Facility may call off 1 shift per every 2-week contract
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Washington State
- Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical nursing experience within the last year
- BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Certifications & Competencies
- Pass Relias Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam with minimum 80% in dosage calculations
- Pass Relias Advanced Dysrhythmia Exam (80% required; 2 attempts max) if assigned to units requiring it
- Other certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., PALS, NRP, TNCC, CCRN) – check unit-specific job descriptions
- Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) certification as applicable
- Completion of facility-specific orientation testing (pass/fail, 80% passing score)
Background & Screening Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check including nationwide, sex offender, FACIS Level 1, and state-specific searches
- Education verification required
- Drug screen within past 12 months (instant acceptable)
- WA State WATCH search required
- Two professional references required
Health & Immunization Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year (not required by facility but needed for credentialing)
- Mask fit test within 12 months (3M 1860R, 1860S, or 1870+ masks)
- Tdap vaccine within 10 years or documented declination
- Negative TB test (Qgold, Tspot, or 2-step PPD within 90 days) or chest X-ray if positive TB history
- Annual TB questionnaire required
- Immunity or vaccination documentation for:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Hepatitis B (titer or declination; vaccine series plus confirmatory titer required)
- Varicella
- Seasonal flu vaccine or declination required during flu season (Sept 29 – Mar 31)
- COVID vaccination or declination required for tracking purposes
Facility & Orientation Details
- Magnet, teaching hospital, Level 1 Trauma Center
- Charting system: EPIC with hard stops
- Scrub color: Blue (provided by facility)
- Parking: Onsite daily parking fee applies; offsite parking with shuttle available on weekdays
- Orientation includes online modules (2-3 hours) to be completed before start date
- In-person orientation testing required on site
Additional Notes
- No on-call requirement
- Badge photo required (professional, waist-up, clear lighting, simple background)
- Multiple facility-specific documents must be signed prior to or at orientation (e.g., license acknowledgment, equipment safety, policies and procedures, job description, PCIS agreement)
- Suicide prevention training required for multi-state licensed nurses working in Washington
- Candidates with temporary RN licenses must complete all pending licensing requirements (including fingerprinting) before starting
This position offers an opportunity to work in a specialized burn and trauma unit with a diverse patient population in a high-acuity, Level 1 trauma setting. The role requires strong clinical skills, relevant certifications, and compliance with comprehensive health and background screening protocols.
