Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Bloomington, Indiana
Specialty: Registered Nurse
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Unit & Patient Population

  • Mixed Acuity Unit: Comfortable working from ICU to some PCU ratios
  • Patient Diagnoses: Cardiovascular Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology, Endocrine, Oncology
  • Unit Details: CVICU with largest patient population in CV surgery and thoracic surgery including CABG, TAVR, SAVR, MVR, and VATS
  • Additional patient populations include Med/Surg, Progressive, and ICU cardiovascular and oncology patients
  • All private rooms with overhead lifts and telemetry

Staffing Ratios & Schedule

  • AA Ratios: 1:3-4 (very rare)
  • ICU Ratios: 1:2
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Shifts:
    • 8 and 10 hour shifts (40 hours/week)
    • 3 twelve-hour shifts (36 hours/week)
    • 4 twelve-hour shifts (48 hours/week)
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Floating within scope to meet facility needs is required
  • Block schedule accommodation: To be discussed
  • Locals not accepted
  • Pending license not accepted; must have Indiana state license and required certifications in hand

Experience & Certifications

  • Required Specialty Experience: Minimum 18 months (1.5 years)
  • First-time travelers accepted
  • Prior travel experience: Not required
  • Certifications Required:
    • ACLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
    • BLS (AHA or RQI acceptable)
    • NIH Stroke Certification preferred
  • Preferred: Previous charge nurse experience

Clinical Skills & Special Requirements

  • Interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Post cardiac surgery care (directly or indirectly from OR)
  • Care of CABG, TAVR/TAVI, SAVR, MVR, VATS patients
  • Arterial line management
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line and PICC line care/management
  • Titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Preferred skills:
    • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
    • Pre/Post Cardiac Cath/intervention care
    • Sheath removal
    • Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD, RVAD, Impella)
    • Ventilator management and care of ventilated patients

Licensing & Documentation Requirements

  • Indiana RN license required and must be verified online within 30 days before start
  • Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy)
  • Background checks including:
    • 7-year work/lived history verification
    • SSN Trace, County Criminal, Statewide, National Sex Offender, FACIS Level III
    • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks within 30 days of start
  • Education verification and official transcripts/diplomas required
  • Competency exams including medication/pharmacology and unit competency exam
  • Color blind testing (Ishihara or equivalent) required
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • Fit mask test within 12 months (specific approved respirators required)
  • Immunizations and health documents required:
    • Negative TB test or chest X-ray within 1 year
    • Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (preferred but not required)
    • Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Rubella, Varicella: Positive titer or 2 vaccines required; no declinations accepted
    • Hepatitis B series, titer, or signed declination required
    • Seasonal Flu vaccination/documentation required (no declinations accepted)
  • Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months (no instant tests accepted)

Additional Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 professional references from recent employment verified within 2 years; references must be from charge, manager, supervisor, or above
  • Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days
  • Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually thereafter
  • Must be able to work 2 out of 3 major holidays

Notes

  • IU Health will not allow Indiana RN travelers to work at their facilities effective 11/30/2024, except for Perioperative/OR RN’s, Allied, and Ambulatory RN travelers (including ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS) who are exempt from this rule and may work past the deadline.

This position is ideal for a Registered Nurse with cardiovascular ICU experience who is comfortable managing complex cardiac patients and procedures, and who meets the licensing and certification requirements for Indiana.
