Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum)

Job Summary

Seeking an experienced Registered Nurse for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Postpartum (LDRP) unit in an acute care hospital setting. This role involves comprehensive care across antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care with a focus on community hospital experience.


Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of specialty experience required (Labor/Delivery/Postpartum).
  • Community hospital experience preferred.
  • First-time travelers not accepted.
  • Prior travel experience not explicitly required.

Work Schedule

  • Weekend rotation: 4-6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday) plus 2 Fridays per 6-week schedule.
  • Holiday shifts: 1 major holiday (Thanksgiving or Christmas) and 1-2 minor holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day).
  • On-call: 2 mandatory on-call shifts per 6-week schedule.
  • No block scheduling.
  • No local candidates accepted (must live at least 75 miles from facility).

Certifications Required

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • FHM (Fetal Heart Monitoring)
  • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
  • ACLS, PALS, TNCC, CPI/MAB, and others may be required or preferred depending on unit specifics.
  • AWHONN Advanced and Intermediate certifications preferred.

Skills Required

  • IV Therapy/Phlebotomy: Blood administration, venous blood draws, peripheral IV start and maintenance, infusion pumps/drips.
  • Labor and Delivery Management: Amnioinfusion, assist vaginal delivery, circulate for C-section, forceps/vacuum extraction, hemorrhage/shock management, sterile vaginal exams.
  • Neonatal Care: Cord blood collection, infant ID/security banding, newborn assessment, phototherapy, circumcision care, metabolic screening.
  • Medication Administration: Antihypertensives, magnesium sulfate, Pitocin, prostaglandins, terbutaline.
  • Fetal Monitoring: Recognition and treatment of abnormal fetal heart rate patterns, use of external/internal fetal monitoring, spiral electrode placement, IUPC placement/calibration.
  • Postpartum Care: Breastfeeding support, episiotomy/incisional care, Foley catheter insertion, wound assessment, bladder distension, postpartum hemorrhage management, couplet care.
  • Surgical Procedures: D&C, tubal ligation, post-op gynecology care including hysterectomy.
  • Pain Management: Epidural anesthesia, general anesthesia, opioids, PCA use.
  • Professional Skills: Isolation precautions, vaccine administration.

Additional Preferred Skills

  • Assist with high-risk deliveries, scrub for C-section.
  • Neonatal resuscitation, APGAR scoring, radiant warmers.
  • Assist with sterile speculum exams, cervical cerclage.
  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency care for infants/neonates.

Floating and Assignments

  • RN expected to care for any patient assignment within the LDRP unit including triage, c-section cases (including circulating), antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum.
  • Full couplet care required.

Facility & Work Environment

  • Acute Care Hospital with 74 staffed beds.
  • LDRP model with vaginal births, c-sections, postpartum care, antenatal testing (NSTs, BPP), post-op gynecology, external cephalic version, antepartum patients.
  • Charting system: Epic.
  • Scrub color: Navy (provided).
  • Free parking available.

Compliance & Documentation Requirements

Background Checks

  • Criminal background check within 6 months required (7-year search including statewide, nationwide, and international if applicable).
  • EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG quarterly checks required.
  • Education verification required prior to start.
  • State-specific searches and registries as applicable.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Primary source verification of professional nursing license required (Missouri license verifiable on NURSYS).
  • IV certification required for LPN/LVN if applicable.
  • Annual renewal and verification of certifications as per unit requirements.

Health & Immunization

  • Physical exam within 1 year required.
  • Fit mask (N95) testing required annually.
  • Tdap vaccine or declination required.
  • Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year required.
  • Measles, mumps, rubella, varicella immunity or vaccination required (with exceptions for certain units).
  • Drug testing within 1 year required and must remain valid throughout assignment.
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season.

Facility Specific Documents

  • HIPAA acknowledgement, latex allergy questionnaire, confidentiality form, regulatory compliance education, hand hygiene, fingernail, and dress code policies must be reviewed and signed prior to start.
  • Badge photo required.
  • Orientation modules (approx. 16 hours) required prior to start unless recently completed at the facility.

Competency Exams

  • Unit-specific competency exams required and must be updated annually.
  • Medication/pharmacology competency exam required.
  • Color blindness testing within 12 months required.
  • Dysrhythmia/EKG competency exam required for certain units.

References & History

  • Two professional references required, preferably supervisors within the last year.
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.
