Job Opportunity: Labor and Delivery Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: Berlin, Vermont
Contract Length: 16 weeks
Employment Type: Travel/Contract


Unit Overview

  • Unit: Women and Children's Unit
  • Specialty: Labor and Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, LDRP
  • Unit Beds: 7 inpatient beds, 3 triage rooms
  • Approximate Deliveries per Year: 300
  • Teaching Facility: No
  • Nurse to Patient Ratio:
    • Active Labor or on Pitocin: 1:1
    • Couplets: 2 or 3 (4 or 6 patients depending on census/acuity)
  • Ancillary Assistance: CNA/PCT available on most shifts
  • Documentation System: Epic (experience within past 2 years required)
  • Medication System: Pyxis
  • Patient Population: Labor, Delivery, Newborn, Postpartum, occasional Med/Surg overflow
  • Shift Hours: 7 AM - 7 PM / 7 PM - 7 AM (rotating every 2 weeks)
  • Weekend Requirement: Minimum every other weekend or adjusted schedule to meet unit needs
  • Call Requirement: Yes, 2 twelve-hour call shifts in a rolling 4-week timeframe
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work 2 out of 4 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Christmas Eve, New Year's Day)

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Vermont
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Minimum 1 year of Labor and Delivery (L&D) experience, including Labor Delivery Recovery & Postpartum (LDRP) experience within the last year
  • Experience working with neonate patients
  • Prior travel nursing experience required
  • Current certifications:
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) issued by the American Heart Association
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • Experience with Epic electronic medical records system within the last 2 years

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation Length: Typically 3 shifts (12 hours each)
  • Specialty Testing: Unit/facility math test, N-95 fit testing
  • Floating: Required within the immediate organization as helping hands or patient sitting; not to take full assignments
  • Charge Nurse: Some travelers may orient to charge after first assignment

Work Environment & Policies

  • Dress Code: Light blue scrubs (provided), closed-toe shoes, no chipped nail polish, trimmed nails
  • Jewelry: Allowed but must be removed in OR
  • Hair/Beard: No restrictions specified
  • Special Equipment: Electronic fetal monitors, smart IV pumps, cardiac monitors
  • Respiratory and anesthesia support available but not always in-house 24/7
  • Unit-specific procedures include IV starts, occasional lab draws, PACU post C-section care, Eat Sleep Console for NAS, epidural catheter removal

Additional Requirements & Information

  • Reliable personal or rental vehicle strongly recommended (public transportation not accessible)
  • Must explain any employment gaps over 90 days
  • Complete and detailed work history required (bed count, EMR, facility type, etc.)
  • No block schedules; work Monday through Sunday with rotating shifts
  • Bi-weekly orientation sessions available
  • Must comply with all facility-required background checks, verifications, and health documents (including immunizations, TB testing, drug screening, and COVID protocols)
  • Must complete required facility-specific modules and documentation prior to start

Compliance & Documentation Highlights

  • Background check within 30 days covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years
  • Education verification as applicable
  • Annual competency exams including medication/pharmacology and color blindness testing
  • Physical exam within 12 months of start
  • N95 fit test required prior to assignment and annually (3M Aura 1870+ mask required for Labor & Delivery)
  • Immunizations: Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine (or medical/religious exemption), COVID vaccination or declination
  • References: 2 professional references from assignments within last 3 years
  • Skills checklist and work history verification within last 12 months

This position offers a dynamic Labor and Delivery nursing experience in a community hospital setting with a supportive team and a focus on maternal and newborn care. Prior travel experience and strong clinical skills in LDRP are essential.
