Job Details

- Location: Grand Island, Nebraska
- Contract Length: 14 weeks
- Shift Hours: 0630-1900 (day), 1830-0700 (night)
- Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
- Holiday Requirement: As needed to meet unit needs
- Floating: May float to MedSurg, Inpatient Rehab, or Skilled Care units
- Orientation: First week classroom, then 2 shifts (12 hours each) on the floor
Experience & Certifications
- Required Specialty Experience: Minimum 1 year of unit experience in PCU or similar setting
- Certifications Required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Prior Travel Experience: Not explicitly required
Unit Information
- Department: Stepdown (Progressive Care Unit)
- Number of Beds: 33
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratio: 1:4-5
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Young adults through geriatrics with sepsis, STEMI, CHF, chest pain, COVID, stroke, renal failure, COPD, DKA, multisystem failure
- Nursing Responsibilities:
- RNs required to titrate drips (Heparin, Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitroglycerin, IV antibiotics, Insulin)
- RNs must read and interpret telemetry strips
- Charge nurse present on each shift and takes assignment
- Support Staff: CNAs available with fluctuating 1:10 ratio; Tele/Monitor Techs present
- Respiratory Equipment: BiPAP, Airvo
Policies & Additional Notes
- Dress Code: Navy Blue scrubs for RNs
- Fingernail Policy: Artificial nails prohibited; refusal to comply may lead to contract termination
- Exam Requirement: Pass/fail open book exam during orientation; 90% required to pass
- Work Environment: Busy patient flow with simultaneous admitting, discharging, and shift change within 6 hours
- Desired Nurse Attributes: Strong teamwork, positive attitude, engagement in patient experience, commitment to bedside report and hourly rounding
- Radius Rule: Candidates must live within 50 miles and cannot be currently employed full time, part time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit (including CHI and Dignity)
- Return to Office (RTO): Required within 7 days of contract start; no additional RTO extensions allowed
This position is ideal for a PCU RN with at least 1 year of experience, current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
