ICU Float Pool Nurse (KS/Zone 4)

Location: Garden City, Kansas
Contract Length: 13 weeks

Unit & Patient Care Details

• Unit Type: ICU Float Pool (Combination of MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, etc.)
• Nurse:Patient Ratios:

  • 1:1 to 1:2 depending on acuity
  • May flex up to 1:3
  • 1:1 for high acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, IABP, Impella)
• Common Diagnoses/Patient Types: General ICU patients across multiple ICU specialties
• Charge Nurse: Designated charge nurse on each unit; typically does not take patient assignments unless necessary (more common on night shift)
• Nurse Aids: None (only sitter needs)
• Respiratory Therapist: Designated RT for ICU but may not be on unit 24/7; RNs expected to assist with respiratory troubleshooting and management
• Respiratory Equipment: Vents, CPAP, BiPAP, High Flow, breathing treatments
• Telemetry: No monitor tech; RNs must read and interpret their own telemetry strips

Certifications & Skills Required

• Required Certifications:

  • BLS (AHA)
  • ACLS (AHA)
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC
• Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years ICU experience required
  • Prefer prior travel experience
  • If first-time traveler: 3+ years ICU experience and Epic experience required
• Skills:

  • Comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, insulin, and more

Scheduling & Work Expectations

• Shift: 7am - 7pm
• Schedule: Created by leadership for 6 weeks at a time
• Flexibility: Travelers expected to fill gaps in permanent scheduling and float within the zone
• Weekend Shifts: 6-9 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule
• Holiday Rotation: May be required to participate
• Call/Standby: Rare, only for low census situations

Floating & Housing

• Floating:

  • Must float throughout Zone 4 (60-mile radius around Garden City, KS)
  • May float to any acuity level including ICU, PCU/Stepdown, and Med-Surg Tele
• Housing: Traveler responsible for securing housing that allows floating within the full 60-mile zone
• Orientation: Clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation (modules may be completed remotely beforehand)

Additional Notes

• Prior travel experience is preferred but not strictly required unless first-time traveler (then 3+ years ICU and Epic experience required).
• Must be comfortable managing complex ICU patients and critical care drips.
• Floating is a key component of this role, covering multiple hospitals within the zone.
