Job Description

Seeking a Medical Surgical nurse for a 13-week travel assignment at a mid-size hospital. The unit has 34 beds with day shift nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:5 and night shift ratios of 1:6. The position offers self-scheduling with shifts from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM and 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM. Weekend rotation requires approximately 4 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule. Holiday rotation is based on the calendar. There may be a call or standby requirement with a 45-minute return policy if called.

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Pneumonia (PNA)
• Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
• Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
• Orthopedic cases (shoulders, hips, knees)
• Appendectomy (appy)
• Cholecystectomy (chole)
• Diverticulitis
• Bowel resection
• Pancreatitis

Unit Information

• Nurse aids (Patient Care Technicians) available on day and night shifts with a max ratio of 1:12
• Remote monitoring telemetry available; MS nurses are not responsible for strip interpretation
• Charge nurse available on both shifts; supervisor available on nights
• Floating within MedSurg scope of practice required
• Dress code: Navy Blue scrubs

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)

Experience Requirements

• MedSurg, Progressive Care Unit (PCU), Telemetry, or Critical Care Unit (CCU) experience required

Clinical Details

• RNs are not required to titrate drips
• Common drips: Heparin per protocol
• Respiratory equipment includes chronic BiPAP and CPAP

Orientation

• 1 shift of clinical nursing education
• 2 shifts on the unit with a preceptor
• 3 twelve-hour shifts

License Requirement

• Current RN license valid in Indiana
