Registered Nurse – Neuro ICU
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Details
- Unit: Neuro ICU
- Unit Size: 32 beds
- Hospital Size: Large (450+ beds)
- Trauma Level: Level 1 Trauma
- Patient Ratios: 1:2
- EMR System: Cerner
- Charge Nurse: Yes (does not take patients)
- Shifts: 12-hour shifts (7am-7pm), may be placed on standby for scheduled shifts
- Floating: Required to float between all ICU floors and Telemetry units; tele patient load 4:1
- Orientation: 2 shifts on the floor
- Monitoring Equipment: Phillips monitors, ventilators available
- Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7
- Pharmacy: Available 24/7
- Scrub Color: Any non-offensive color or print; steel grey preferred for neuro floors
- Holidays: Work into core staff rotation; approximately 4 weekend shifts per 4 weeks
Patient Population & Care
- Critical care patients with neurological diagnoses
- Procedures include craniotomies, brain tumor removal and ablations, brain biopsies, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
- Strong neuro assessment skills and intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring experience required
Required Certifications & Experience
- Certifications: BLS, ACLS
- Experience: Minimum 2 years ICU experience in a large hospital (450+ beds)
- Trauma Experience: Level 1 Trauma experience required
- Travel Experience: 3-6 months prior travel experience required
- Additional Requirements:
- Must have experience with external ventricular drains (EVD)
- Must pass a Prophecy Dysrhythmia Exam 24-48 hours prior to acceptance (max 2 attempts)
- Must pass a Day 1 pass/fail exam during orientation
- SIMs Lab competency required for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes (pass/fail)
- Must have natural hair color and no facial piercings; men must be clean-shaven for fit testing
- Must have own vehicle if part of a travel team
Additional Notes
- Candidates cannot work multiple contracts simultaneously
- Must be off permanent staff at this health system for 12 months to be eligible for travel assignment
- Teaching hospital environment; nursing students may be present
- Floating includes medical-surgical telemetry floors
- 50-mile radius rule applies for travel assignments
- Facility enforces strict onboarding deadlines; all documentation must be complete before start date
