Registered Nurse (RN) – PreOp
Location: College Station, Texas
Contract Length: 12 weeks
Job Overview
- Work in a 10-room Pre-Op unit with nurse-to-patient ratios approximately 1:3.
- Manage 5-30 cases per day including OR, endoscopy, and cystoscopy procedures.
- Float between College Station and Bryan campus (16 miles apart) as needed, covering PreOp and Phase 2 areas.
- Work schedule: Monday to Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM (8-hour day shifts).
- Weekend requirement: 1 weekend per month with 24-hour call shifts (7:00 AM Saturday to 7:00 AM Monday).
- Call response time: 30 minutes.
- Charge nurse role includes patient assignments and supervisory duties while assisting in the department.
- No nurse aides on the unit.
- EMR systems used: SIS and Meditech.
- Dress code: Navy blue scrub color.
- Orientation: 1-2 days with a preceptor.
Patient Population & Procedures
- Common cases: cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repairs, lumpectomy, mastectomy, hysterectomy, colectomy, tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy, bilateral myringotomy tubes, microdirect laryngoscopy, thyroidectomy, parathyroidectomy, bunions, occasional orthopedic surgeries (totals, podiatry).
- Endoscopy procedures: EGD, colonoscopy.
- Additional exposure: robotics, gynecology, labor & delivery (C-sections).
- Minimal trauma cases; trauma patients typically sent to Bryan campus.
Required Certifications & Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Texas
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 2 years of Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) experience, with at least some experience within the last year
- Current ACLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Current PALS certification issued by the American Heart Association
- Pre-Op experience
Additional Requirements & Notes
- Candidates must not have been employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any facility associated with the specified health system within the past year; PRN employment through outside firms is acceptable.
- Call-outs are strongly discouraged and may lead to termination.
- Self-sign up for two weekend shifts per month or one full weekend.
- Small department with potential to float to PACU.
Summary
This is a day-shift RN role in a busy PreOp unit requiring strong clinical skills, flexibility to float between campuses and units, and the ability to work independently as a charge nurse. The position demands current certifications, passing a dysrhythmia test, and a commitment to weekend and call coverage. Acute PreOp experience is preferred but new travel nurses are welcome.
