Registered Nurse – Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM)
Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Day shift weekends are Saturday and Sunday)
Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
Floating: Required to float to every level of care; travelers expected to take a full team
Unit Details
- 20 beds, all private and monitored
- Patient-to-nurse ratios vary by acuity: 1:1, 1:2, or 2:1
- Patient population includes post open heart surgical patients (CABG, valve surgeries, dissections, vascular procedures), STEMI, unstable angina, cardiogenic shock, severe heart failure, TAVRs, ventilated patients, and overflow from other ICUs including COVID patients
- Specialty interventions and equipment used: IABPs, Impellas, Swan Ganz catheters, ECMO, external pacemakers, CRRT
- Lines commonly used: PICC, midlines, central venous catheters (CVC), Swan-Ganz, arterial lines (radial and femoral)
- Ventilator support includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, heated high flow, and nitric oxide
- Telemetry monitoring with Philips monitors; RNs must read and interpret cardiac strips
- Respiratory therapists available 24/7
- Charge nurses and house supervisors present 24/7; charge nurses sometimes take patient assignments
- Patient care technicians (PCTs) assist with ratios ranging from 1:12 to 1:15 or higher depending on staffing
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois
- Minimum 2 years of Cardiovascular ICU (CVICU) experience, including experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Additional Information
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling for travelers
- Dress code: No specific scrub color required; scrubs must be clean and professional in appearance (not too tight or falling off)
- Unit cares for complex patients including those with temporary pacemakers, electrophysiology patients, and soon post VAD placement and heart transplant patients
- RNs are expected to troubleshoot respiratory equipment as needed
This position is ideal for experienced CVICU nurses comfortable with advanced cardiac care and critical care interventions, ready to work independently from day one.
