Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical ICU

Location: Winnemucca, Nevada
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights
Hours: 12-hour shifts (6 PM – 6:30 AM), approximately 36 hours per week
Setting: Small critical access hospital with 16 Medical/Surgical beds and 3 ICU beds

Job Overview

• Provide nursing care in a combined Medical Surgical and ICU unit.
• Patient ratios vary by acuity:

  • Medical/Surgical: 1:4-6
  • ICU: 1:1-3 (may include mixed patients from ICU, Med/Surg-Telemetry, and Swing Bed)
• Nurses are responsible for their own cardiac monitoring; no dedicated monitor techs.
• Charge nurse oversees both Med/Surg and ICU areas and takes patient assignments.
• Staff includes CNAs and unit clerks to assist.
• Respiratory Therapists manage respiratory treatments and equipment; RNs may assist during emergencies.
• Self-scheduling with 4-week blocks; weekend and holiday shift requirements apply.
• Floating may include assistance to Long-Term Care, Emergency, and Obstetrics units.

Required Qualifications

• Valid RN license in Nevada
• Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
• Minimum 1 year of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) experience within the last year
• Experience in a similar size facility
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Medical, surgical, pediatric, skilled or acute rehab (Swing Bed), and ICU patients.
• Common conditions include:

  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Sepsis
  • Alcohol withdrawal
  • Hypertension/hypotension
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) exacerbation
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbation
  • Basic surgical post-op care
  • Comfort care patients

Orientation & Scheduling

• Unit-specific orientation: 1 day general + 1-2 days preceptor-led.
• Weekend requirement: 3 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule.
• Holiday requirement: One major and one minor holiday shift per season.
• Call shifts may be assigned based on census and employee choice.

Work Environment & Additional Information

• Small town living with access to outdoor activities and state parks.
• Nurses wear navy blue scrubs; CNAs wear maroon or black.
• Hospitalists available on campus 24/7 with a rotating schedule.
• Case manager and social worker support available; nurses expected to communicate as needed.

Prior Travel Experience

• Not required; first-time travelers are accepted.
