Job Opportunity: Histology Technician
Location: Houston, Texas
Employment Type: Clinical-Allied-Registry
Shift: 3 AM – 11:30 AM, Monday to Friday
Contract Length: 7 weeks (49 days converted to weeks)
Job Description
- Validate specimen identification and ensure appropriateness of sample type and size.
- Prioritize workload according to handling protocols and established turnaround times.
- Process specimens using tissue processors, following correct order of solutions and programs.
- Embed tissues and section at least 30 blocks per hour on the microtome to the correct thickness.
- Produce correct number of sections and slides for each specimen or block type with minimal quality complaints.
- Perform routine staining procedures (AFB, MSN, Gram, Oro) on mounted tissue sections or body fluid preparations.
- Prioritize and multitask staining procedures to ensure timely and productive processing.
- Coverslip slides at a minimum rate of 3 slides per minute; label and distribute slides for pathologist interpretation.
- Assist with liver biopsies, fine needle aspirations, and retrieve fresh specimens in various labs (main lab, cryostat lab, NGI suite, CT suite, Electron Microscopy).
- Perform inquiry functions (technical, specimen number, and result) and troubleshoot problems.
Requirements
- Certification: HT(ASCP) or HTL(ASCP) required.
- Education: Associate's Degree in Science or Histology.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in Histology (based on specialty requirement).
- Knowledge of hospital and laboratory operations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and exercise sound independent judgment.
- Basic knowledge of computer functions.
- Working knowledge of special stains and paraffin tissue sectioning.
- Ability to operate tissue processors, stainers, embedding units, cryostats, microscopes, and centrifuges at a basic level.
