Registered Nurse (RN) - Observation Unit

Job Description

The RN is responsible for providing professional nursing care to a group of patients during a designated time frame. Care is delivered using the nursing process, current nursing trends, technology, and available resources within the institution’s philosophy.

Essential Functions

Perform all unit-specific responsibilities within the scope of service.
Implement procedures and theories related to the observation unit.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care for healthcare team use.
Complete initial patient assessments upon admission and develop appropriate care plans based on patient and family needs.
Implement and modify care plans and nursing interventions based on ongoing evaluation.
Ensure patient and employee safety by reporting or correcting hazards and incidents.
Communicate effectively and professionally to resolve issues.
Provide constructive feedback to peers and collaborate to expand knowledge.
Identify personal learning needs and take initiative for professional development.
Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.

Department-Specific Functions

Assess IV sites every 4 hours.
Start new IVs according to policy.
Maintain documentation standards as evidenced by passing quarterly chart audits.
Attend at least 5 out of 6 staff meetings annually.
Identify changes in patient status and respond appropriately.

Required Qualifications

Experience

Minimum 1 year of relevant nursing experience.

Education

Required: ASN (Associate of Science in Nursing)
Preferred: BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing)

Certifications & Licensure

Illinois state RN License in good standing
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from American Heart Association

Skills

Fluent in English (reading, writing, comprehension, speaking)
Basic computer skills (word processing, spreadsheets, email, web browsing)
Multicultural sensitivity
Critical thinking and independent judgment in decision-making
