Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract) - Charleston, West Virginia

Unit & Schedule

  • Unit: 5S Trauma Stepdown (IMC/PCU)
  • Shift: Nights, 7pm-7am
  • Schedule Options: 3x12 or 4x12 shifts
  • Workdays: Weekdays, every other weekend required, every other week orientation on Thursdays
  • Float: Possible float within scope to meet facility needs
  • Holiday Requests: Limit to no more than 1 of the 3 major holidays

Patient Population & Unit Details

  • 25 Floor Beds, 6 Step-Down Beds, 6 Pediatric Beds (travelers not required to care for pediatric patients)
  • Multidisciplinary team caring for multi-system trauma and surgical patients
  • Intermediate Care Stepdown Unit (6 beds)
  • Nurse-to-Patient Ratios: Floor RN 1:5, Step-Down Unit 1:3

Experience & Licensure Requirements

  • Minimum 2 years RN experience
  • Minimum 1 year in specialty (PCU, IMC, Trauma, SDU preferred)
  • First-time travelers accepted if experienced in ICU/Trauma
  • WV or Compact RN License required (pending license submissions accepted)
  • Must be within 100-mile radius of facility (75-99 miles requires approval)

Certifications & Skills Required

  • BLS and ACLS (AHA only, no pending certs allowed)
  • TNCC preferred
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) required for Trauma Stepdown and certain units (Blue Card only, no online courses)
  • Skills: IV starts, ventilator management, telemetry, Level 1 trauma experience, conscious sedation
  • Fit testing required (annual; onsite fit testing may be accommodated)

Contract Length

  • 13 weeks

Orientation & Training

  • Orientation held every other week on Thursday and Friday (2 days)
  • Includes Cerner Infusion Management training
  • Pass/fail testing required for EKG, medication calculation, and blood administration (2 attempts allowed)
  • Inservice training modules must be completed 1 week prior to start (approx. 4 hours)
  • Review of facility-specific policies (dress code, blood administration, math calculation, EKG review) required prior to start

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 1 - Mar 31) unless medically exempt with documentation
  • COVID-19 vaccine NOT required
  • Physical exam within 1 year, stating good health and no limitations
  • Negative TB test within 3 months or negative chest X-ray if positive TB history
  • Tdap vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions accepted with approval)
  • MMR (Rubeola, Mumps, Rubella) and Varicella immunity required (vaccines or positive titers)
  • Hepatitis B vaccination or immunity required (3-dose series if no prior immunity)
  • Drug screen within 30 days of start, including a full panel (no placeholders)
  • Background checks: 7-year criminal background within 30 days of start, including SSN trace, sex offender search, national and international checks if applicable
  • Annual renewal of background checks and certifications as required

Documentation Required for Submission

  • Valid Driver’s License (required)
  • Social Security Card (legible)
  • Residency Declaration Form (if working on compact license)
  • RN License verification (NURSYS within 2 days of submission)
  • Minimum 2 manager/charge nurse references within past 2 years
  • Skills checklist for specialty
  • Pass/fail testing acknowledgment
  • Physical exam and health documents as listed above

Additional Notes

  • Permanent employees cannot return as travelers for 2 years after last permanent day worked at this facility
  • Scrub color: Royal Blue/White for RNs
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • Parking: Free for travelers
  • Facility type: Level 1 Trauma Center, major teaching hospital with 855 staffed beds

This position is ideal for experienced trauma or stepdown nurses comfortable with night shifts and working in a high-acuity trauma center environment. First-time travelers with ICU/Trauma experience are welcome. Compliance with all health, certification, and documentation requirements is mandatory.
