Job Opportunity: Respiratory / Neuro Diagnostics Specialist

Location: Washington, District of Columbia
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks


Job Description

  • Locals accepted at travel rate.
  • Specialty preference: NICU/PICU; Pediatric experience strongly preferred.
  • Facility Type: Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Teaching & Magnet Hospital.
  • Beds: 323 inpatient beds, 70 NICU.
  • Charting system: Cerner.
  • Scrubs: Any solid color, no logos; child-friendly attire required.

Licensure & Certification Requirements

  • Must hold an active D.C. nursing license or have a pending D.C. license application with the Board of Nursing for at least 3–4 weeks.
  • If license is pending, proof of submission is required.
  • Applicants who have not applied for their D.C. license are not eligible.
  • Required License: DC RRT License.
  • Required Certifications (must be current prior to start):
    • RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist)
    • BLS (Basic Life Support)
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • Additional certifications based on unit/specialty may include:
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    • NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Procedure)
    • CHEMO (Chemotherapy)
  • National certifications and primary source verifications are required.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year required.
  • 3+ years recent experience strongly preferred for first-time travelers.

Work Schedule

  • 3 or 4 shifts per week.
  • Weekend requirement: Every other weekend.
  • No on-call duties.
  • Floating within scope allowed; no floating to sister facilities.
  • Block scheduling not available.
  • Guaranteed 36 hours/week; up to 48 hours available (overtime only after 48 hours).

Time-Off Policy

  • Maximum 3 shifts off for 13-week contracts.
  • Maximum 8 shifts off for 26-week contracts.
  • Taking 1 full week off requires adding an additional week to the contract.
  • No time off approved during:
    • August 31 – September 6
    • November 23 – November 29
    • December 21 – January 3

Parking

  • Nights only: Onsite parking available.
  • Days or day/night rotation: Offsite parking required.

Required Documents & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License/State ID).
  • Background checks within 30 days of start covering all locations lived/worked/schooled in past 7 years.
  • Education verification or transcript/diploma if verification pending.
  • Physical exam within 30 days of start including latex allergy info.
  • Fit mask test (N95 or PAPR) within 1 year of start, updated annually.
  • Immunizations and titers required:
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years.
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray as applicable.
    • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) with 2 vaccines or positive quantitative titer.
    • Hepatitis B series and quantitative titer or declination form.
    • Varicella with 2 vaccines or positive quantitative titer.
  • 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start (must include marijuana).
  • Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required.
  • COVID-19 vaccination or declination required for tracking.
  • Facility-specific modules and training must be completed prior to start.
  • Photo for badge must meet facility guidelines and be submitted immediately after signing.

Testing & Competencies

  • Medication calculation exam at orientation (minimum 84% to pass, 2 attempts allowed).
  • Medication test/pharmacology competency exam required.
  • Color blindness testing required (online or physical).
  • Competency exam required.

References & History

  • Two professional references dated within the past two years required (preferably supervisors/managers).
  • Employment application and skills checklist required.

This position is ideal for respiratory therapists with pediatric and NICU/PICU experience who meet the licensure and certification requirements and are comfortable working in a high-acuity pediatric trauma center environment.
