ICU Registered Nurse Travel/Contract Position
Location: New Haven, Connecticut
Shift: Nights (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Unit: Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
- Average patient ratio: 1:3 (days, nights, weekends)
- Call: No
- Float: Yes (to Progressive Care Unit, other ICUs, and SRC campus as needed)
- Every Other Weekend (EOW) coverage required
- Facility Type: Short Term Acute Care, Level I Trauma Center
- Charting system: Epic
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Connecticut
- Minimum 2 years of ICU (Intensive Care Unit) nursing experience, including experience within the last year
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) certification
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
Competencies & Certifications
- Medication/Pharmacology Competency Exam (minimum 85% score within 12 months of start)
- Color Blind Testing (minimum 80% score; required for all candidates starting on/after 8/2/2024)
- Dysrhythmia/EKG Competency Exam required for ICU and related units
- Additional certifications may be required depending on unit assignment (e.g., TNCC for ER, PALS for pediatric units, NRP for NICU)
Health & Safety Requirements
- Physical exam within 12 months of start
- Fit mask test within 12 months of start; must be clean-shaven for testing; annual updates required
- Negative TB test or chest X-ray documentation (specific acceptable tests detailed)
- Annual TB questionnaire
- 10-panel drug screen within 12 months of start
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 – 3/31)
- COVID vaccination series preferred but not required
- Required immunizations or proof of immunity:
- Measles (Rubeola), Mumps, Rubella (positive titer or 2 MMR vaccines)
- Hepatitis B (positive titer, vaccine series, or declination within 1 year)
- Varicella (positive titer, 2 vaccines, or physician-documented history)
- Tdap vaccination highly preferred for pediatric specialties, labor and delivery, postpartum (declination accepted)
Training & Facility-Specific Requirements
- Completion of multiple mandatory training modules and attestations prior to or on start date, including but not limited to:
- Language Services Training
- CAUTI Education Training (except PICU, NICU, Psychiatry/Behavioral Health)
- Suicide Risk and Environmental Assessment Training
- Mobile Heartbeat Alarm Module (except ER/ED, Pediatrics, ICU, NICU)
- Stroke Education (except pediatric specialties and NICU)
- CLABSI Prevention Training
- Preventing Pressure Injury Training
- Patient Transportation with Oxygen Education
- Pyxis ES MedStation Training
- Baxter Pump Interoperability Training
- Patient Bedside Rounding (except OR, Behavioral Health, Ambulatory, ER/ED)
- Ventricular Assist Device Awareness (except certain campuses)
- AME Blood Administration Module (except Case Managers, Behavioral Health/Psych, Home Health)
- New Employee Orientation Module
- 21st Century Cures Act Module (required for RNs except Home Health)
- ED Handbook (for ED/ER RNs only)
- eCart Training Module (not required for Pediatric, Periop/OR, Outpatient, Case Managers, Home Health)
- Chaperone Policy Training
- Fire Safety Module (effective 5/4/2026 and forward)
Background & Documentation Requirements
- 7-year criminal background check (including SSN trace, counties lived/worked, statewide, national sex offender, federal, and extended checks) within 12 months of start; must be updated annually
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start
- Verification of highest level of education; foreign equivalency evaluation required for internationally educated candidates
- Official transcripts may be required if education verification cannot be completed
- Employment application with 7-year work history and no gaps greater than 90 days
- Work history verification for last 7 years (attestations not accepted)
- One supervisor reference within the past year required for Cardio Thoracic ICU; standard references for other units
- Skills checklist within 12 months of start
- Attestation of prior radiation exposure required for certain tech roles (not applicable to RN ICU role)
- Driver’s license or state ID with photo matching legal name required on first day
Additional Notes
- Prior travel experience is not required; first-time travelers are accepted
- Float assignments may include Progressive Care Unit and other ICU areas
- Parking cost is approximately $125/month (for informational purposes only)
