Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Oncology (Travel/Contract)

Location: Columbus, Ohio
Contract Length: 16 weeks


Job Summary

  • Work on a mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) / Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit caring for medical oncology patients.
  • Unit has approximately 24 PCU beds and 24 Medical-Surgical Telemetry beds.
  • Patient population includes a variety of solid tumors and some blood cancers with high acuity.
  • Pediatric patients are very rare on this unit; pediatric experience is not required.
  • Chemotherapy competence is not required but training is available through a 2-day chemotherapy course if interested.

Schedule

  • Self-scheduling requests are accepted before final schedule posting.
  • Orientation:
    • Week 1: Monday to Friday, day shift orientation.
    • Week 2: 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor.
  • Shift: 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; assignments reviewed every 4 weeks but may change based on staffing needs.
  • Weekend shifts vary.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio
  • Minimum 1 year of Medical-Surgical / Telemetry nursing experience within the last year
  • Oncology experience
  • Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association

Unit Equipment & Procedures

  • B450 monitors with GE telemetry system.
  • Bladder Scanner.
  • Alaris infusion pumps.
  • Continuous Bladder Irrigation.
  • Patient Controlled Analgesia (PCA) pumps.
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention.

Patient Care Details

  • High acuity oncology patients with diverse diagnoses.
  • Pediatric patients are rarely cared for by agency staff.

Background & Compliance Requirements

  • 7-year criminal background check within 90 days of start, including FBI and BCI fingerprinting.
  • Education verification from accredited nursing programs required.
  • Ohio BCI & FBI fingerprinting required with specific codes and timelines.
  • Drug screening: Negative 10-panel drug screen within 3 months of start (no pending tests allowed).
  • Various health documents required including:
    • Physical exam within 1 year of start.
    • Immunizations and titers for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), Varicella, Hepatitis B, Tdap, TB testing or questionnaire.
    • Seasonal flu vaccination or declination during flu season.
  • Annual competency exams including medication/pharmacology and dysrhythmia/EKG competency required.
  • Unit-specific competency exams required.
  • References: 2 professional references required, including at least one from a manager or formal leader.
