Registered Nurse - Med-Surg Telemetry Unit (Omaha, Nebraska)

Job Overview

  • Work on a 40-bed medical-surgical telemetry unit caring for adult patients (18+ years) with acute and chronic illnesses including sepsis, respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, cardiac diseases, and COVID-19.
  • Manage titratable drips, chest tubes, tracheostomies, complex wound care, post-bariatric procedures, high oxygen delivery systems, and end-of-life care.
  • Participate in a team-based care delivery model involving bedside RNs, LPNs, CNAs, virtual nurses, and other care team members.
  • Float frequently within scope to various units as needed to meet staffing demands.
  • Patient-to-nurse ratios: Days 1:8, Nights 1:9.
  • Facility is 100% nicotine-free.
  • Weekend shifts required: 4 out of 8 possible in a 4-week period.

Required Qualifications

  • License: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license for Nebraska (pending license accepted but must be in hand before start).
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of telemetry nursing experience in a large, urban hospital setting.
  • Prior Travel Experience: Not accepted for first-time travelers unless they have 2 years of experience at a Level I Academic Medical Center.
  • Certifications:
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) required.
    • ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) may be required depending on unit.
  • Skills:
    • Experience with drips required on all floors.
    • EPIC electronic charting experience required.
  • Must be prepared to float frequently to other units within the hospital system.

Work Schedule & Other Requirements

  • Option for 36 or 48-hour shifts.
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays during the contract.
  • Locals not accepted; candidate must live more than 100 miles from the facility.
  • Scrubs are mandatory (specific color and style required).
  • Parking permits available for a monthly fee or daily parking options.
  • Up to two weeks of time off (RTO) allowed with prior approval.

Additional Requirements & Compliance

  • Government-issued photo ID required.
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including nationwide and federal checks.
  • Ongoing monthly SAM and OIG checks.
  • Education verification and high school diploma required.
  • Various health and safety certifications and documentation required, including:
    • Physical exam within 1 year, updated annually.
    • Fit mask test within 1 year, updated annually.
    • Immunizations: Tdap, MMR, Varicella, Hepatitis B, annual flu vaccine documentation or declination.
    • Negative TB test or chest x-ray documentation.
    • Drug screening within 60 days of start, updated annually.
  • Annual skills checklist required.
  • Two professional references from the last 2 years.
  • Must comply with state-specific registry and abuse/neglect checks.

  • Care teams include RNs, LPNs, CNAs, care techs, transport team, and paramedics.
  • Facility cares for some of the sickest and most complex patients in the region.
  • Strict adherence to facility policies including scrubs and nicotine-free environment.

This position is ideal for experienced telemetry RNs comfortable with a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and flexible floating assignments.

Cons

Ethics are questionable at best, M/S unit demands higher acuity of care than most hospitals M/S units; a lot of the nurses are inexperienced.
