Job Opportunity: ER RN in Minnesota (Winona)

Position Overview

• Specialty: ER RN
• Location: Winona, Minnesota
• Start Date: ASAP
• Contract Length: 13 weeks
• Shift: 3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts

  • 0700-1900 (2 RNs)
  • 1100-2300 (1 RN)
  • 1900-0700 (2 RNs)
• Weekend Requirement: Usually every 3rd weekend
• Holiday Requirement: May be asked to work holidays
• Call/Standby: Only if low census or overstaffed
• Floating: No floating required
• Dress Code: Any color, appropriate fit/design scrubs
• Orientation: 1 twelve-hour shift with a preceptor

Required Certifications

• BLS
• ACLS
• PALS/ENPC
• TNCC
• NIHSS
• CPI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention)

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 3 years of ER nursing experience in a similar size facility
• First-time travelers accepted (prior travel experience not required)
• Prefer candidates with precepting experience (may occasionally precept new staff or travelers)

Facility & Department Details

• Trauma Level 4, Acute Stroke Ready, STEMI Receiving (no cath lab in-house)
• 9 beds, 2 trauma bays
• Separate triage area (travelers may be required to do triage)
• Designated psychiatric/seclusion rooms
• Security in-house 24/7
• Average ER patient volume: ~35 patients/day
• Nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:3-5
• ED Physician/Mid-level coverage 24/7 with MD in-house
• Charge nurse usually acts as triage; travelers typically not asked to take charge roles unless necessary
• Support staff includes ED Techs (CNAs or EMTs), respiratory therapists (RT) in-house 24/7

Patient Population & Common Diagnoses

• Patient age range: Pediatrics through Geriatrics
• Common cases: abdominal pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, stroke, walk-in STEMIs, trauma, psychiatric, sore throat, cough, burns, procedural sedation, and more

Skills & Responsibilities

• Critical thinking and flexibility required
• May assist with precepting nursing skills
• Expected to recognize abnormal and critical cardiac rhythms (no monitor techs)
• RNs perform blood draws upon IV starts; phlebotomy available 24/7 for assistance
• May assist with patient transport for X-ray or CT scans
• Common drips: epinephrine, propofol, antibiotics, blood products, etc.
• RT manages respiratory equipment; RNs assist with breathing treatments and procedural sedation

This position offers a dynamic ER environment with a diverse patient population and requires a skilled, experienced ER nurse with strong critical thinking and teamwork abilities.
