Registered Nurse (Float Pool)

Location: Weirton, West Virginia
Contract Length: 13 weeks (approximately 3 months)
Shift: 12-hour night shifts, weekends as scheduled
Schedule:

• Self-scheduling with 3 shifts per week
• Schedule made 4 weeks in advance
• Travelers submit ideal schedule but must be flexible to fill staffing gaps
• Every other weekend required
• Possible holiday rotation participation
• No call or standby requirement

Job Overview

• Float to multiple units with varying acuity levels
• May float to Emergency Department (ED) or Critical Care Unit (CCU) if within skillset
• Units include:

  • CCU (10 beds)
  • Intermediate Care (IMC, 30 beds)
  • Medical-Surgical Level 7 (27 beds)
  • Medical-Surgical Level 8 (48 beds)
  • Skilled Care (33 beds)
  • Emergency Department (15 beds)

Patient Ratios

• CCU: 1:2-3
• IMC: 1:4-6
• MS Level 7: 1:5-6
• MS Level 8: 1:5-8
• Skilled Care: 1:8-10
• ED: To be determined

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) if working in CCU or ED

Experience Requirements

• Minimum 5 years nursing experience
• Preferably 1 year ICU experience or 1 year ED experience
• Ideally an ICU/Stepdown traveler comfortable floating to lower acuity units
• Must be comfortable managing patient ratios from 1:2 up to 1:10
• Flexibility, adaptability, multi-functional expertise, and strong problem-solving skills required

Clinical Responsibilities

• Manage critical drips (e.g., Heparin) in ED and CCU
• Titrate drips as needed in ED and CCU
• Perform typical nursing duties including ADLs, vital signs, bathing, toileting, feeding, repositioning, answering call lights, and blood sugar monitoring
• Troubleshoot respiratory equipment (ventilators, trachs, BiPAP, CPAP, high flow devices) alongside respiratory therapists
• Read and interpret telemetry strips, print strips, perform measurements, and identify rhythms (telemetry techs available 24/7)

Orientation

• 1 day of unit-specific orientation plus 1 day with a preceptor
• Orientation provided for only one unit before independent assignment

Additional Information

• Must have an unexpired driver’s license and be within a 50-mile radius
• Nurse aids/patient care techs available with ratios approximately 1:7-15
• Charge nurse present on each shift and unit; may take patient assignment as needed
• Assignments communicated via text message within 2 hours prior to shift start
• Dress code: Navy blue scrubs

Required Licensure

• Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license for West Virginia
