Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse (RN) – Neuro Med-Surg Acute
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Overview
- Department: Neuro Med-Surg Acute
- Beds: 54 (2 semi-private)
- Nurse-to-Patient Ratios:
- Day shift: 1:4-5
- Night shift: 1:5-6
- Common Patient Diagnoses: Stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, neuroscience cases, some medical overflow
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license (or application process initiated)
- BLS (AHA) certification
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Prior travel experience required (no first-time travelers)
- Previous experience working on a dedicated neuro unit
- Experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT (heparin gtt experience)
- Ability to titrate drips as required
Work Environment & Scheduling
- Shift Length: 12-hour shifts
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday both shifts)
- Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday
- Call/Standby: None
- Floating: Float in rotation with staff; travelers may float to general unit or other units only if competent and paired with trained nurse
- Charge Nurse: Present 24/7, generally does not take patient assignments unless short staffed
- House Supervisor: Present 24/7
- Nurse Aides/Patient Care Techs: Present with ratios approximately 1:9-12 depending on shift
- Telemetry: House-wide telemetry with Phillips monitors; nurses do not read strips
- Respiratory Equipment: High flow oxygen for stable COVID patients (rare); RNs troubleshoot only
Orientation & Policies
- Orientation: 2 days unit-specific orientation with educator and preceptor
- Drug-Free Campus: Negative drug screen required for all panels
- Dress Code: No scrub color requirement; tattoos must be covered; only ear piercings allowed
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Non-billable orientation hours: 12 hours
- OSF Call Off Policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty
This position requires a highly experienced neuro med-surg RN with prior travel experience and trauma expertise, comfortable with titrating drips and working in a fast-paced neuroscience unit.
