ICU RN Travel Job - Bay City, Texas

Contract Length

• 13 weeks

Required Certifications

• ACLS
• BLS
• PALS (must have PALS certification in hand to start)
• TNCC
• Prefer NIHSS certification

Experience Requirements

• Prefer 2-3 years ICU experience (use 3 years as required)
• Must be very competent with ventilators or capable of being educated on them

Schedule & Shifts

• 36/48 rotating schedule (12-hour shifts, 7am-7pm)
• 5 days on / 5 days off, then 2 days on / 2 days off matrix
• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required
• No block scheduling
• Limited return to office (RTO)

Unit & Patient Details

• 6 ICU beds total
• Nurse-to-patient ratios:

  • 2:1 standard
  • 3:1 for low acuity (stepdown patients)
  • 1:1 for high acuity
• Charge nurse responsibilities include taking a patient load
• No nurse aides unless needed for 1:1 care
• Nurses expected to monitor their own patients (no tele/monitor techs)
• Common patient diagnoses: Afib, RVR, Sepsis, Respiratory failure, Severe anemia, GI bleeds, lower acuity trauma, DKA, fresh total joint replacements
• All ICU patients are in one unit; major medical issues are transferred out unless stroke patients (TPA administered in-house)

Equipment & Support

• EMR system: Meditech
• Ventilator: Puritan Bennett 840
• Drips administered include all cardiac meds, sedation, antiarrhythmics, Sandostatin, insulin
• Hospitalist coverage: 12 hours/day plus call; ER doctor in-house 24/7
• Respiratory therapy available 6am-9pm, then on-call; nurses must intervene if patient deteriorates
• Pharmacy available 6am-9pm; house supervisor mixes meds after hours, pharmacist on call
• IV team not available, but PICC team available if needed

Orientation & Training

• 2-day floor-specific orientation
• Health education/testing modules required the week prior to start (time varies per individual)

Floating

• May float to MedSurg or ER depending on traveler’s experience (if ER experience, will take ER patients; if not, assigned tasks)
