Job Opportunity: SAMC - Surgery - General (Major) Tech
Location: Rockford, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Unit Information
- Unit: CVOR (Cardiovascular Operating Room)
- Number of Suites: 15 total (2 CVOR specific)
- Cases per Day: Approximately 35 total, with 3-6 CVOR-specific cases daily on average
- Common Cases:
- CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting)
- Carotid surgeries
- Valve replacements
- Endarterectomies
- Femoral-popliteal bypass
- Angiograms with endovascular intervention
- Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) repairs
- VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery)
- Sternal repairs
Required Certifications & Experience
- Certifications:
- RN (Registered Nurse)
- BLS (Basic Life Support) required
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) preferred
- Experience:
- MUST have CVOR experience
- Neuro and orthopedic experience required
- Level 1 trauma experience required
- Scrubbing: Not required for RNs
Staffing & Support
- Majority of cases require working alone with a circulator
- First assist or second scrub may be present depending on the case
- Charge RN coverage in OR 24/7
- House Supervisor coverage over entire hospital
- OR techs available (Surgical Technologists and 1 CSFA)
Scheduling & Shifts
- 8-hour variable shifts:
- 06:45 - 15:15
- 11:00 - 19:30
- 14:45 - 23:15
- Some 06:15 starts may be required
- Total 40 hours per week, with travelers possibly working up to 3 shifts in the later time slots (11:00-19:30 or 14:45-23:15)
- Weekday call 2-3 days per week:
- Call starts at 15:00 for cardiovascular cases
- Call starts at 19:00 for other specialties
- Some overnight call-ins may be required (23:00 - 07:00)
- Weekend call every other weekend, starting at 07:00
- Holiday work required
- Call can be taken remotely but must be able to report onsite within 30 minutes
Additional Information
- Floating: Not to other floors, but may circulate other specialties if no CV cases available
- EMR system: EPIC
- Scrub color/dress code: Hospital-provided scrubs
- Orientation: 3-5 days, unit/department specific
