Labor & Delivery Nurse - Yuma, Arizona

Contract Details

• Length: 13 weeks
• Start Dates: January 12 or January 19 (not flexible)
• Shifts: 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM
• Weekend Requirements: 3 weekend shifts in a 4-week schedule

  • Night shifts: Friday/Saturday
  • Day shifts: Saturday/Sunday
• Holiday Requirements: Assigned 2 out of 3 holidays (including eve/day); on-call available but not mandatory
• Call/Standby: Low census on-call

Unit Information

• Department: Labor and Delivery
• Beds:

  • L&D Beds: 9
  • OR Suites for C-Sections: 2
  • Triage Beds: 7
• Births: Average 9 per day, 250 per month, 3000 per year
• Patient Ratios: Aim for 1:1 or 1:2 (2 patients common)
• Patient Population:

  • Gestational age 28 weeks and above
  • High incidence of hypertension
  • 7-10% no prenatal care
  • High Spanish-speaking population (Spanish language skills preferred)
  • Telemonitoring utilized

Required Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring

Experience & Skills Required

• Must be proficient in:

  • Vaginal exams (note: teaching facility experience may mean less skill)
  • Scalp electrode placement
  • Circulating in C-sections
  • Newborn transitions
  • Assisting anesthesiology
  • IV starts and blood draws
  • APGAR scoring
  • Postpartum hemorrhage control (SIM lab training available)
  • Epidurals
  • Amnioinfusion
• Preferred: Experience with "spinning babies" technique
• Water birth knowledge is a plus but not required
• RNs are required to titrate drips including magnesium, Pitocin, insulin, and blood

Team & Support

• Charge Nurse present on each shift
• OB Techs available as nurse aides/surgical techs
• OB/Neonatologist available in-house 24/7
• Respiratory Therapy equipment available (BVM for neonates, T-Piece resuscitator)
• Tele/Monitor Techs on unit; cardiac monitor tech on adult side; OB RNs do not read telemetry
• Some core staff and charge nurses have ACLS certification

Equipment & Systems

• Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) system: CPN Centricity
• Hospital scrubs provided

Additional Notes

• Floating assignments may include NICU, Pediatrics, Women's services, MedSurg, ICU, or RDU with appropriate patient assignments
• L&D nurses may be assigned antepartum patients and must be prepared to care for babies for two hours post-delivery
• Postpartum experience preferred for postpartum patient care assignments
• Orientation includes one unit-specific orientation, one clinical education/EPIC training, and one day on the floor
