Registered Nurse (RN) – Adult Medical Specialty Unit
Location: Peoria, Illinois
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights (12-hour shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Unit Beds: 56 (private and semi-private)
Unit Overview
- Patient Ratios:
- 1:4-5 (07:00–23:00)
- 1:5-6 (23:00–07:30)
- Common Patient Diagnoses:
- Cellulitis, sepsis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, syncope, anemia, uncontrolled diabetes, acute respiratory failure, liver failure, kidney failure, behavioral health, and addictions.
- Nurse Aide/Patient Care Tech Support:
- PCT ratio 1:8-10
- Duties include vital signs, accuchecks, bladder scans, and ADLs.
- Respiratory Therapy Equipment:
- Bipap/CPAP for sleep apnea, inhalers, suctioning.
- Telemetry:
- House-wide telemetry monitored remotely; RNs can view strips on pack or computer. Phillips monitors used.
- Charge Nurse:
- Free charge RN on each floor who does not take patient assignments.
- Floating:
- Rotation to other acute care general medical areas such as nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, oncology.
Scheduling & Time Off
- Shift Pattern: 3 consecutive 12-hour night shifts (7 PM – 7:30 AM)
- Scheduling System: API electronic schedule with self-scheduling/block scheduling allowed
- Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend (Sat/Sun for days, Fri/Sat for nights)
- Holiday Requirement: Varies
- Call/Standby: None
- Orientation: 2-3 shifts on unit-specific orientation
- Non-billable Orientation Hours: 12 hours
Required Qualifications
- Active Illinois RN license or confirmation that application process has been initiated
- BLS (AHA) certification required
- Must produce a negative drug screen for all panels (drug-free campus policy)
- Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, chest tubes required
- Preferred: EPIC electronic health record experience
- Preferred: Prior travel nursing experience on a MedSurg floor
- Candidates with Level I trauma center experience considered without travel experience if EPIC experience is present
- No requirement for RNs to titrate drips
- Common drips used: Heparin, Lasix
Professional Appearance & Conduct
- Dress Code: Any color professional scrubs
- No visible tattoos or piercings except ears
Additional Notes
- Local placements accepted within a 50-mile radius
- Call-off policy: Equivalent of 12 hours off every 13 weeks with no penalty or pay requirement for missed shifts
This position is ideal for experienced MedSurg RNs with strong acute care skills, familiarity with EPIC, and a preference for night shifts in a supportive team environment.
