Overview

  • Unit type: Mixed acuity surgical oncology unit caring for PCU and Med Surg patients
  • Patient population: Adults and geriatrics

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in Ohio
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • PCU - Progressive Care Unit (2 years of experience)
  • PCU - Progressive Care Unit experience within the last year
  • BLS issued by American Heart Association
  • ACLS issued by American Heart Association
  • NIHSS
  • Surgical Oncology experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • ONS Chemo

Clinical Details

  • Staffing goal is 1:4, with possible ratios up to 1:5
  • Travelers may be required to float within their scope of practice
  • Weekend scheduling varies based on unit needs
  • No set or blocked scheduling
  • If scheduled on a rotating contract, shifts may include days, nights, or both depending on department needs

Unit Experience

  • Surgical oncology cases include breast, thyroid, and melanoma
  • Hepatobiliary cases include liver, pancreas, spleen, biliary tract cancers, and neuroendocrine
  • Colorectal cases include colon and rectal cancer
  • Plastics cases include reconstructive breast cancer or sarcoma
  • Common procedures and treatments include chemotherapy, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, oncologic emergencies, cytokine release syndrome, insulin drips, and heparin drips
  • Strong focus on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention

Pros

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.

Cons

Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
