Job Opportunity: Pediatric Oncology Registered Nurse (Travel/Contract)

Location: San Diego, California
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Nights, 3 shifts per week, 12 hours each (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)
Hours per Week: 36 hours
Weekend Requirement: 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period (weekends for night shift are Friday and Saturday)
Guaranteed Hours: Yes, after call-off policy is met
Block Scheduling: Not specified

Unit Overview

  • Hematology inpatient unit with 38 beds
  • Patient population includes bone marrow transplant, blood cell transplantation, neuroblastoma, anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors, hemophilia, ITP, sickle cell anemia, and other hemoglobinopathies
  • Care involves IV therapy, sedation procedures, post-op care, central line management (Hickman’s, port-a-caths), blood products, and chemotherapeutic agents
  • Charting system: Epic (experience highly preferred but not mandatory with strong inpatient Hem/Onc background)
  • Scrub color: Any
  • Free parking for travelers

Required Qualifications

  • Valid RN license in California
  • Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years of pediatric hematology/oncology nursing experience
  • Pediatric hematology/oncology experience within the last year
  • Experience working with pediatric patients
  • APHON (Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses) certification
  • BLS (American Heart Association) certification
  • PALS (American Heart Association) certification
  • Chemotherapy certification

Certifications & Competencies

  • Medication/Pharmacology competency exam (pediatric focus) with 100% passing score required; two attempts allowed
  • Competency exam with minimum 80% score, must be updated annually
  • Core Parts I, II, and III competency exams required annually
  • RN Medication Calculation Exam with 100% passing score required prior to start; one retake allowed
  • Pass/fail medication test required for all RNs (except Case Managers)
  • ACLS preferred but not required for this placement
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) not required for this unit

Health & Compliance Requirements

  • Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming good health without restrictions
  • Negative TB test (Qgold/Tspot within 6 months or two negative PPDs) or chest X-ray if positive history
  • Immunizations or positive titers required for:
    • Measles (Rubeola)
    • Mumps
    • Rubella
    • Varicella
    • Hepatitis B (titer preferred; vaccine series acceptable if titer unavailable)
    • Tdap vaccine within 10 years (declinations not accepted)
    • Seasonal flu vaccine required during flu season (Oct 31 – Apr 28) with no exemptions
  • Fit test for N95 masks within 1 year of start
  • Negative 9-panel drug screen (non-THC) within 30 days of start; includes amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, methamphetamines, morphine (opiates), oxycodone
  • Photo for badge (JPEG format, recent, plain background) required before start

Background & Documentation

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (front and back) required on first day
  • Background check within 30 days of start, including criminal history for all counties lived/worked in last 7 years, sex offender search, national criminal database, education verification
  • Education verification required; transcripts/diploma accepted as placeholder if third-party verification pending
  • Employment application covering full 7 years with explanations for gaps over 6 months
  • Two supervisory references from clinical leadership (director, supervisor, or manager) verified within 1 year of start (charge nurses not acceptable)
  • Various facility-specific documents and acknowledgments must be signed prior to start (e.g., confidentiality, code of conduct, HIPAA, meal waiver, professional accountability)

Additional Notes

  • No on-call responsibilities
  • No floating to other units or sister facilities
  • Return-to-office (RTO) restrictions: maximum 6 days
  • Candidates without EPIC experience will be considered only if they have a very strong inpatient Hem/Onc background
  • Behavioral health-specific certifications (MCPP) and other non-RN certifications are not applicable for this role
