Registered Nurse - PCU Float (Travel/Contract)
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Shift: Night (3 shifts per week, 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Details
- Patient Care Unit (PCU) with nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5
- Weekend Requirement: 8 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (Friday, Saturday, Sunday combination)
- Charge RN and teaching hospital experience preferred but not required
- Floating required within Medical-Surgical-Intermediate (MSI) units including Emergency Department for inpatient holds
- First-time travel nurses accepted
- Locals accepted
- No block scheduling accommodation
- No pending licenses accepted
- Return to Office (RTO) restrictions: No more than 7 days
- Guaranteed minimum: 3 shifts per 13 weeks
Required Qualifications
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in Missouri
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Progressive Care Unit (PCU), with PCU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) / Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Certifications:
- ACLS (American Heart Association)
- BLS (American Heart Association)
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Clinical skills and competencies in:
- Management of dysrhythmias
- Telemetry including remote monitoring
- Use of Rapid Response Teams
- Cardiovascular care including angiogram, post-myocardial infarction (MI), pre/post cardiac catheterization, and pre/post cardiac surgery
- Pre/Post hemodialysis management and renal failure care
- IV therapy including blood product administration, central line care/management, and PICC line management
- Procedural sedation administration
Compliance and Documentation Requirements
- Government-issued ID required
- Criminal background check within 6 months, including statewide and nationwide searches, sex offender registry, and international searches if applicable
- Quarterly EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks
- Education verification of highest nursing degree (no pending at start)
- Professional license primary source verification (NURSYS for Missouri)
- Drug testing within 1 year of start, including a comprehensive panel (amphetamines, benzodiazepines, cocaine, opiates, etc.)
- Physical exam within 1 year of start
- Fit mask (N95) testing required annually; must be able to shave facial hair if needed for proper fit
- Immunizations and titers:
- Tdap vaccine or declination required
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray within 1 year (2-step PPD or equivalent)
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella immunity or vaccination/declination as applicable
- Seasonal flu vaccination or approved exemption required during flu season (Sept-April)
- Background and state-specific checks as required for Missouri placements (e.g., MO Family Care Safety Registry, MO EDL, MO Highway Patrol Check)
- Fingerprinting required for Illinois long-term care or rehab float assignments (not applicable here)
- Annual completion of facility-specific regulatory compliance education and HIPAA acknowledgement
- Required facility policies review and signature prior to start (hand hygiene, fingernail, dress code, confidentiality, latex allergy questionnaire)
- Badge photo (head and shoulders, white background, no obstructions, taken within 6 months)
Competency Exams and Skills Checklists
- Unit-specific competency exams including:
- Dysrhythmia/EKG exam (minimum 80% pass rate)
- Medication/pharmacology competency exam
- Oncology competency exam if assigned to oncology units
- Unit-specific skills checklist required within 1 year of start
References and History
- Two professional references required (supervisors within last year preferred)
- Employment application required and must be uploaded for facility review
- Performance evaluations may be requested but are not mandatory for extensions or per diem status
Additional Notes
- No on-call requirement
- Must be able to float within scope to multiple units including ED
- No accommodation for block scheduling
- Must meet all compliance and credentialing requirements prior to start
- Candidates must be prepared for weekend and night shifts as specified
